The Resort Archive

Every Scottsdale resort and hotel worth knowing — past and present

Scottsdale didn’t stumble into being a resort town — it invented the modern desert vacation, one property at a time: 1910s health-seeker inns, dude ranches with real wranglers, Rat Pack pool decks, and today’s five-star golf-and-spa compounds. This is the working archive — 101 resorts and hotels you can check into right now, from the five-star compounds to the Old Town rooftops, the Airpark suites and the motels that still hang a vacancy sign, and 10 legends we’ve lost, each with who it’s actually for, what it costs, and the story behind it. Every page has a reading-depth toggle: skim it in 30 seconds or go full rabbit hole. Not sure whether you want a resort near Old Town, on the Camelback corridor or up north? Start with where to stay in Scottsdale, then when to come.

Midcentury Icon Old Town

Hotel Valley Ho

Scottsdale's 1956 midcentury masterpiece — the walkable Old Town hotel where Hollywood hid from the press, Ramada nearly loved it to death, and an $80 million restoration brought back every breezeblock, terrazzo floor and pastel panel exactly where architect Edward Varney put them.

Luxury Flagship Paradise Valley border

JW Marriott Camelback Inn

The Valley's original grand desert resort: 453 adobe casitas between Camelback and Mummy mountains, open every season since 1936, and the property that taught the Marriott family what a resort even was — they liked it so much they bought it.

$$$$ Since 1936

Luxury Flagship Camelback Corridor

The Phoenician

Charles Keating's infamous 1988 desert palace at the foot of Camelback Mountain — built with other people's money, seized by the government, and matured into Scottsdale's definitive luxury resort, with a mother-of-pearl-tiled pool and the Jokake Inn's 1936 bell towers still standing on the lawn.

Midcentury Icon Old Town

Safari Hotel

Opened November 1956 on Scottsdale Road, the Safari was the town's first true glamour hotel — modernist architecture, a legendary lounge circuit, the French Quarter restaurant, and a guest list from Sinatra's orbit — before decades of decline ended in 1998 closure and 1999 demolition. The Safari Drive condos hold its ground today.

Midcentury Icon Paradise Valley border

Casa Blanca Inn

A 1920s desert mansion turned Moroccan-fantasy resort: George Borg crowned it with an onion dome in the 1940s, hotel operators opened it as the Casa Blanca Inn in 1953, and for three decades Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Eisenhower-era society dined at the Sultan's Table — until the 1980s converted it all to a gated community that kept the dome as a clubhouse.

Pioneer Era Camelback Corridor

Ingleside Inn

Built as the private Ingleside Club in 1909 by canal magnates W.J. and Ralph Murphy amid their citrus groves south of Camelback, it became the Valley's first true luxury resort in the 1920s — golf course, cottages, gala winters — and invented the playbook every Scottsdale resort still runs. It closed in the early 1940s; a school and then subdivisions took the land.

Born as the Paradise Valley Racquet Club in October 1956 and transformed by tennis-resort pioneer John Gardiner after 1967, the Tennis Ranch on Camelback ran up to 18 courts for the country's power elite — its bipartisan Senator's Cup a Washington institution — until the boutique-spa era remade the mountainside as Sanctuary in 2001.

Jokake Inn

Begun as a painter's family tearoom in 1926 and named 'mud house' by a Hopi visitor, the Jokake Inn grew into one of winter Scottsdale's defining resorts — easterners, titans and titled Europeans in adobe casitas below Camelback. The resort faded in the 1970s, but its twin 1936 bell towers still stand on The Phoenician's grounds: Scottsdale's oldest surviving resort architecture.

The 1970s hacienda sprawl on Lincoln Drive whose lagoon pool and swim-up grotto bar — a waterfall-curtained cave you floated into — made it three generations of Valley kids' favorite resort memory. “Gone but not forgotten” entries cover resorts that built Scottsdale’s reputation but have closed or been demolished. They’re kept here as local history — and as a reminder that even a landmark with a thousand rooms can vanish when the land under it gets valuable enough.
