What is the Hampton Inn Carefree?
For most of its seventy-year history, Carefree offered visitors two kinds of bed: a casita at the Boulders or a room at the old Carefree Resort, now CIVANA. Both are lovely. Neither is cheap. The Hampton Inn by Hilton Carefree, which opened in 2022 at 2 Easy Street, is the town’s answer to everyone else: a 97-room select-service hotel a minute’s walk from the Carefree Desert Gardens and the giant Carefree Sundial.
Start with the geography. Carefree is a separate town, not a Scottsdale neighborhood — incorporated in 1984, planned in the 1950s by K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington with streets that tell you to relax. Old Town Scottsdale is about forty-five minutes south. What you get in exchange is cooler mornings, darker skies and a downtown you can actually walk.
The hotel is the Hampton you know, with some local styling. Developer CFM Realty pitched it to the town as a “boutique-type” Hampton rather than the usual highway box, meant to sit comfortably on Easy Street. Inside are the brand’s standards: free hot breakfast, a seasonal outdoor pool, two fire pits, a fitness room, meeting space and a small bar.
Who it’s for: art-fair and festival visitors, hikers using Black Mountain and Spur Cross, golfers playing the far north, wedding guests at the resorts who’d rather not pay resort rates, and anyone visiting family in the foothills. Who should look elsewhere: anyone who wants Old Town’s nightlife, a resort spa or room service.
How to do the Hampton Carefree right
Walk downtown first. The location is the whole point. The Desert Gardens, the Sundial, the galleries along Easy Street and the Spanish Village shops off Ho Hum Road are all a short stroll away. Do it early, before the midday sun, and you’ll understand Carefree in an hour.
Eat breakfast in, dinner out. The free breakfast handles mornings. For dinner, the serious meal is Palo Verde at the Boulders, and the loose one is the Spotted Donkey Cantina at the Boulders’ entrance, both a few minutes south. For saloons, barbecue and live country, drive five minutes west to Cave Creek and the Buffalo Chip. Downtown Carefree itself mostly closes early, so plan ahead.
Book around the festivals. Carefree’s fine art and wine festival weekends, the fall Enchanted Pumpkin Garden and the Hidden in the Hills studio tour around Thanksgiving fill the town. Staying at the Hampton means you walk to the booths while everyone else hunts for parking on side streets.
Use the elevation. Carefree sits roughly a thousand feet higher than Old Town. The pool and fire pits are better on spring and fall evenings than you’d expect, and after dark the sky is far darker than in the city — the stargazing notes explain where to look.
Drive, and plan the drive. There’s no transit, and ride-shares are scarce at night. Parking at the hotel is free. For Old Town dinners, budget forty-five minutes each way and do it once, not nightly.
A chain hotel comes to the town on Easy Street
Carefree was invented as a sales pitch. In the mid-1950s, K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington laid out a desert community designed around serenity, and the names in the plat — Easy Street, Ho Hum Road, Nonchalant Avenue — were the marketing. The Sundial went up downtown in 1959, the Carefree Resort followed in the 1960s, and Desert Forest Golf Club opened in 1962. When the town incorporated in 1984, it did so partly to keep that small, quiet character intact. The Boulders arrived the next year, at the luxury end of the market, and for decades that was the lodging story: two upscale properties and nothing in between.
That gap mattered more as the far north filled in. Scottsdale annexed its way up to Carefree’s southern edge, Cave Creek’s saloon strip became a regional draw, and the art festivals brought weekend crowds downtown. Visitors came for the day and drove home, or paid resort rates for a bed. A town center that wanted foot traffic in the evenings had no hotel within walking distance of it.
The Hampton was the fix. Nebraska-based CFM Realty broke ground on November 13, 2019, with Mayor Les Peterson at the ceremony and Scottsdale’s ProFab Construction as the contractor. The plan called for 97 rooms, a pool and spa, meeting rooms, a fitness center and breakfast and bar seating, in a design the developer described as boutique-type, not off-the-shelf Hampton. The target was late 2020. The hotel opened in 2022, after the pandemic had upended the hotel industry everywhere.
What it represents is modest but real. Carefree has spent seventy years mostly declining to change, and the Hampton doesn’t change much: it’s a hotel a minute’s walk from the Sundial, built to blend in. What it does is let ordinary travelers spend a night in the town instead of passing through — to see the boulders go orange at sunset, walk to dinner, and wake up somewhere that still means its own name.
