What is the SpringHill Suites Scottsdale North?

The SpringHill Suites Scottsdale North is a four-story, 121-suite Marriott hotel at Scottsdale Road and Bell Road. SpringHill is Marriott’s all-suite, select-service brand. Every room is a studio-style suite with a sitting area and a sofa bed, and a buffet breakfast is included in the rate. There’s an outdoor pool and hot tub, a fitness center and a picnic area. The hotel was renovated around 2019.

Don’t confuse it with the newer SpringHill Suites Phoenix Scottsdale, which opened in 2023 at Scottsdale and McDowell roads, about 12 miles south.

This one is technically in Phoenix. Scottsdale Road is the city line here, and the hotel sits on the west side next to its sister, the Courtyard Scottsdale North. The Residence Inn across the road, also owned by Summit, is in Scottsdale. All three use Scottsdale mailing addresses.

The location works for a lot of trips. The Airpark and Scottsdale Airport are about 2 miles east, Kierland Commons about a mile and a half south, Mayo Clinic Hospital about 4 miles northwest, and the Scottsdale Promenade across the street.

Who is it for? Families who need a sofa bed, business travelers staying a few nights, patients and caregivers making repeat trips to Mayo Clinic Hospital, and spring-training fans. Who should look elsewhere: anyone who wants a resort, a restaurant in the building or a walkable night out.

How to do the SpringHill Suites Scottsdale North right

Choose it over the Courtyard for longer stays. The two hotels share an owner and a corner, but they’re built for different trips. The SpringHill has suites and free breakfast and no restaurant; the Courtyard has a bistro, a bar and paid breakfast. For a family, or for more than two nights, the SpringHill usually works out better.

Get the right room type. A little under half the suites have two beds; the rest have one, plus the sofa bed. If there are four of you, ask for two beds.

Have dinner nearby. There’s no restaurant on site. The Courtyard’s Bistro is next door, The Capital Grille and Picazzo’s are at the Promenade, and Kierland’s North Italia, The Mission and Dominick’s are five minutes south by car.

For medical stays, know your campus. “Near Mayo Clinic” in this area usually means Mayo Clinic Hospital at 56th Street and Mayo Boulevard, about 4 miles away. Mayo’s original Shea Boulevard clinic is about 10 miles away, in east Scottsdale. Check your appointment letter.

Use the picnic area. With a pool, a picnic area and takeout from the Promenade, a family can skip a restaurant night without anyone feeling cheated.

Book event weeks early. Barrett-Jackson in January, the WM Phoenix Open in early February and spring training in March fill everything near Bell Road. In summer you’ll have the pool mostly to yourself.

A Bell Road hotel and the hospital up the road

The SpringHill Suites stands on the corner where Bell Road, the Valley’s 17000 North grid line, crosses Scottsdale Road and turns into Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. Scottsdale Road is the city line, so the hotel’s west-side lot is in Phoenix, part of the stretch locals know by its Scottsdale address.

The building’s own history is hard to pin down. Hotel listings date it to 1993 or 1997, and both dates are earlier than the SpringHill Suites name, which Marriott introduced in the late 1990s. That suggests it opened under another name or was converted, but the records we found don’t say which, so we won’t guess. What’s clear is that by 2018 it was a long-held hotel in the portfolio of Summit Hotel Properties, a hotel REIT, alongside the Courtyard next door. Both later moved into Summit’s joint venture with GIC, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, which bought the Residence Inn across the road in 2023. All three were renovated in 2019.

The corner’s hotels were built for the Airpark, the business district that grew around Scottsdale Airport, the old Thunderbird Field II runway from 1942, and for the new Kierland district to the south. In 1998 something else arrived. Mayo Clinic, which had opened its Arizona clinic on Shea Boulevard in 1987, opened Mayo Clinic Hospital in north Phoenix, the first hospital it designed and built itself. Over the next 25 years Mayo moved most of its Arizona growth there: the cancer center, proton-beam therapy and, in 2024, the medical school. You can read that story in our Mayo Clinic in Arizona guide.

For the hotels at Scottsdale and Bell, that meant a second customer. On a Tuesday in January the breakfast room holds Airpark consultants and car-auction buyers, but also patients and family members on their way to appointments a few miles up the road. It’s a small hotel whose guest list shows how north Scottsdale’s economy works.
