When to Come

Scottsdale, month by month

The honest answer to “when should I visit?” is that Scottsdale has two cities: the one that runs from October to April, where the weather is the best in the country and prices know it, and the one that runs from May to September, where the resorts are half-empty, the pools are bathwater, and the desert is genuinely dangerous after 9 AM. Every month below gets the same treatment — what the weather actually does, what’s on, what to skip, and what the locals are doing.

The year in one chart

Typical daily high and overnight low in °F. Terracotta is the high, sage is the low; the dots are rain. Tap a month to open its guide.

Rounded from Phoenix-area 30-year climate normals. North Scottsdale runs a few degrees cooler than the numbers here; a parked car runs forty degrees hotter.

January

The desert's version of winter: a puffer jacket at breakfast, shirtsleeves by lunch.

Glorious afternoons, cold mornings, real crowds. Come for the light, not the pool.

February

The month the whole country tries to be here at once, and mostly succeeds.

The best weather of the year at the highest prices of the year. Worth it if you book early.

March

Baseball every afternoon, wildflowers on the trails, and a bill that reflects both.

The best month of the year to be here and the worst month to book late. Plan in the fall.

April

The month the desert stops being pleasant and starts being warm, in the best way.

Warm, dry, still busy, and the first month you can actually swim. Late April is the sweet spot.

May

Hot afternoons, perfect mornings, and half the price of March.

The best value month with weather you can still plan around. Mornings are yours; afternoons belong to the pool.

June

A furnace with a swim-up bar. Cheap for a reason, and the reason is 105.

Brutally hot, genuinely cheap, and completely doable if you build the day around 5 a.m. and the pool.

July

The hottest month of the year, and the one month a five-star pool is a reasonable purchase.

Come for the resort deal and the storms, not for the town. Plan every day around 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

August

The sunrises are the best of the year. So are the deals. Everything in between is a negotiation.

July with more humidity and better sunsets. Same deal, same rules: live before 8 a.m. and after 8 p.m.

September

The calendar says autumn. The pavement disagrees until roughly the last week.

Treat the first three weeks like August and the last one like a preview of October. Book it for the rate, not the weather.

October

The first perfect stretch of the year, and the first month you'll pay full price for it.

The season opens. Aim for the second half, book early, and don't complain about the rate — you're paying for the weather everyone else waited six months for.

November

The month the town stops apologizing for the weather and starts charging for it.

Arguably the best all-around month of the year. Book the weekends early and bring a jacket for the evenings.

December

Sunny at noon, 44° at dawn, and lit up like a theme park after dark.

Beautiful, cold-edged, and expensive over the holidays. Come for the lights and the hiking; leave the swimsuit expectations at home.

Best weather

March & November

Highs in the 70s, cool mornings, and long patio evenings. March costs more; November is the quiet twin.

Best value

May & late September

Resort rates drop before the heat fully arrives in May, and again as it breaks in September.

Know before you book

July & August

Monsoon season: spectacular storms, five-star rooms at motel prices, and a desert you can only use before breakfast. Read the monsoon field manual first.
