Don Carson's Chicago-style chophouse was the Cactus League's living museum — every wall covered in signed balls, bats, and jerseys, with Hall of Famers at the next table each March. For 38 years, it was where baseball ate in Scottsdale.

Greasewood Flat
Greasewood Flat (often remembered as Greasewood Flats) was, for 40 years, an open-air burger-and-beer roadhouse built around an 1880s bunkhouse near Pinnacle Peak, where bikers, cowboys, snowbirds, and CEOs shared picnic tables and fire barrels until the land sold in 2015.

Mary Elaine's
The Phoenician's rooftop French dining room was Arizona's standard-bearer for formal fine dining for two decades — a AAA Five Diamond room with a Grand Award cellar where Alex Stratta and Bradford Thompson won James Beard Awards before it closed in April 2008.

Pink Pony
For nearly seven decades, Old Town's legendary steakhouse doubled as the unofficial clubhouse of the Cactus League — owner Charlie Briley helped bankroll Scottsdale Stadium itself — before three closures between 2009 and 2016 ended it for good.

The restaurant and bar inside the all-suite Scottsdale Marriott Old Town on Third Avenue — American cooking with a Southwestern twist from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., a daily 3-to-5 happy hour, a patio and poolside service, and the most dependable early breakfast within a short walk of the Civic Center and Scottsdale Stadium.

A 7,000-square-foot modern American restaurant and lounge that opened on Sixth Avenue in December 2025, in the SouthBridge space that was Kelly's, with vintage tennis racquets on the walls, wagyu and caviar on the menu, and a late-night kitchen on weekends.

50 Shades of Rosé
A restaurant, cocktail bar and late-night room at the quiet east end of Indian Plaza that redecorates itself for a new theme every season, with its own menu, cocktails and costumes. In October 2026 it is Carnevil, a haunted carnival with corn dogs, cotton-candy cocktails and clowns.

92 Drinks + Eats
92 Drinks + Eats is the corner bar at Shea Boulevard and 92nd Street that has been the neighborhood's hangout for more than thirty years under its old name, the 92nd Street Cafe & Bar: a casual room with a real kitchen open until 10 (midnight on weekends), karaoke every Friday and Saturday at 9, free bingo on Tuesdays, a Friday fish fry, Sunday brunch, college football and the NFL on the big screens, and a 2 a.m. close on weekends.

AGAVE SW Bar & Grill
AGAVE SW Bar & Grill is the only restaurant at the Scottsdale Marriott at McDowell Mountains, 16770 N Perimeter Drive, the 1999 all-suite hotel in the Perimeter Center office park beside TPC Scottsdale. It serves three meals a day with an Arizona accent, entrées average $10 to $20, an adjoining bar has an 85-inch screen, and its west-facing patio looks across the TPC Champions Course at sunset. It replaced the hotel's earlier Zambra Grille, a Mediterranean room, with the old Agave Bar's name.

Akamaru Japanese Restaurant
Akamaru is the chef-owned Japanese restaurant that Chef Hiro and his wife opened in October 2025 in a former Duck Donuts at 15689 N Hayden Road, Suite 126, in the Sonora Village center at Hayden and Frank Lloyd Wright. By day it sells onigirazu rice sandwiches and donburi bowls from $12.50; at 5 p.m. it becomes an izakaya with sashimi, karaage, braised pork belly and Japanese craft beer. No investors, no franchise, one couple and one kitchen.

Allegra Rooftop Pool & Bar
Allegra is the Moroccan-styled rooftop pool and bar on the twelfth floor of The REMI., the 161-room Autograph Collection hotel that opened July 22, 2025 next door to Maya in the Entertainment District. By day it is a pool club with cabanas and daybeds; after 6 p.m. the swimsuits go away, the dress code arrives and it runs as a lounge with DJs until 2 a.m. on weekends. It is billed as the highest rooftop pool in the city.

Allora Gelato
Allora Gelato is the 575-square-foot gelateria that Lalo Fuentes and his fiancée Ciara Jarosch opened in November 2024 at 6990 E Shea Boulevard, Suite 106, in the strip at the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Shea. You pick a size at an iPad, pay, then taste and choose from small-batch flavors like Ricotta and Croatian Fig and Bourbon Salted Caramel, served in gluten-free waffle cones baked in the shop. Phoenix New Times put it on its best-ice-cream list within a year.

Almost Famous
A small house-music dance club next door to 50 Shades of Rosé, open only Friday and Saturday nights since 2023. It sells itself as the alternative to the big open-air clubs a block over: rotating DJs, a dark room, and bottle service if you want it but no requirement to buy it.

Alo Cafe
A small, globally minded breakfast-and-lunch cafe in a converted 1960s garage in Charles Miller Square, opened in 2013 by husband-and-wife Steve and Hilja Martinez and named for an Estonian composer: kringel and tortilla española, Belgian waffles with hot compote, and a dog-friendly patio a few minutes' walk from the galleries.

Andreoli Italian Grocer
Chef Giovanni Scorzo's strip-mall grocer-trattoria on Via Linda is a national cult favorite — bread, mozzarella, pasta, and gelato all made in-house by the Calabrian-born James Beard semifinalist, worth every minute of the fluorescent-lit line.

Anhelo
Chef Ivan Jacobo's fine-dining restaurant spent three years in downtown Phoenix's Orpheum Lofts, then moved in July 2025 into a building of its own at Goldwater and First Avenue: a garden walkway, a fountain, a small dining room and a choice of tasting menus that run from a short, approachable one to an 11-course blowout.

Arcadia Farms Café
Carolyn Ellis opened Arcadia Farms in a vintage house on 1st Avenue in 1990 as a carryout market and bakery; thirty-six years later it is Scottsdale's definitive daytime café — organic salads, French-leaning plates, serious patisserie, and the most civilized patio in the arts district.

Aridus Wine Company
The Old Town tasting room of Aridus, a Willcox winery that grows every grape on its own 40-acre estate in the Chiricahua foothills and makes it in a 28,000-square-foot former apple warehouse. The Main Street room, a former art gallery with caged chandeliers and leather high-tops, pours seated, guided tastings that change every month.

A family-run Italian dining room at Thunderbird and Scottsdale Road since 1996, Arrivederci does the old-school things — homemade ravioli, veal ossobuco, chicken al limone, tableside warmth — a mile south of the Kierland glitz and at half the price.

Authentic EthioAfrican
Authentic EthioAfrican is the Ethiopian restaurant that Anduale Hassan and Elsabet Tiruneh opened on January 23, 2025, at 6989 N Hayden Road, Unit A12, on the southeast corner of Hayden and Indian Bend, the first Ethiopian restaurant in Scottsdale. It is the second location of the family's Phoenix original, open on McDowell Road since 2012, and serves wots, tibs and kitfo on house-made injera under 30-foot ceilings, with a coffee-ceremony display at the door and a former sushi bar pouring Ethiopian-spiced cocktails.

Bad Jimmy's
Chef James Piazza's retro smash-burger bar, a pop-up turned downtown Phoenix favorite, opened its Scottsdale outpost in March 2025 in the space Starlite BBQ held for more than six years — lacy griddled double burgers on K4 Ranch Arizona beef, wings, soft serve finished with olive oil and salt, and a bar that pours Miller High Life next to natural wine.

A small, locally owned honky-tonk restaurant and bar in the Main Street space where Lulu Belle drew 1950s Scottsdale's celebrities: Nashville hot chicken, Kool-Aid fried pickles and Honky Tonk Fries, a whiskey-forward bar under the old saloon's vintage backbar, live music most nights and a country brunch on weekends.

Belmont Kitchen & Cocktails
Belmont Kitchen & Cocktails is the Rosewood Concepts restaurant that opened in February 2025 at 8876 E Pinnacle Peak Road, Suite 100, next door to the original Mastro's at Pima and Pinnacle Peak. Owners Phillip Lewkowicz and Neal Thompson hired Alex Stratta, the 1998 James Beard winner from Mary Elaine's and the chef of two-Michelin-star Alex at the Wynn, as executive chef that July. It is North Scottsdale's first real chef's room above the 101.

Fox Restaurant Concepts' splashy Sonoran-style cantina has anchored the Borgata of Scottsdale near the Paradise Valley border since November 2008, serving short rib tacos, guacamole, and margaritas on one of the busiest patios on lower Scottsdale Road.

Blue Coyote Cafe
Blue Coyote Cafe is the three-meal restaurant on the Garden Level of Talking Stick Resort, 9800 E Talking Stick Way, open since the resort's April 2010 debut, with tables over the main pools, an American menu with Southwestern touches and a sushi bar from 4 p.m. Its dinner-only sibling, Blue Coyote Cantina, serves Southwestern and Mexican food and tequila a few steps from the casino floor. Bootleggers pairs low-and-slow smoked brisket and ribs with a deep American whiskey list in a moody, Prohibition-styled Old Town room — one of the only serious barbecue operations in a city that mostly outsources its smoke.

Born & Bred
Born & Bred is the Scottsdale restaurant of Aftermath owner Charles Barber, opened in spring 2024 in the former Humble Pie space at 6149 N Scottsdale Road in The Shops at Hilton Village. It is a 90-seat modern American tavern built around a wood-fired pizza oven, the Aftermath burger and a wine-leaning bar, open for lunch and dinner every day. The one thing to know: come for the burger and the pizza, not the steak.

Bottled Blonde
Evening Entertainment Group carved half of the old Axis-Radius nightclub into a 9,000-square-foot pizzeria and beer garden in January 2014 — wood-fired pies and craft beer at picnic tables by day, one of the entertainment district's loudest parties by night, and the template for a brand now copied in other cities.

The Buffalo Chip is Cave Creek's cowboy saloon, about 40 minutes north of Old Town: live bull riding in the arena out back every Wednesday and Friday ($10 cash, gates at 6 p.m.), Texas-style barbecue, free line-dance lessons, and a house band five nights a week. People searching for "Buffalo Chips Scottsdale" mean this place.

Butterfield's Pancake House
A Shea Boulevard staple since 2005, Butterfield's is Scottsdale's old-school pancake house — oven-baked apple pancakes, super omelettes, corned beef hash, and bottomless coffee served by staff who know the regulars' orders by heart.

The family-owned original of a Scottsdale-born breakfast chain: scratch-made pancakes, crepes, and fresh-squeezed OJ served daily from 6:30 am to 2:30 pm on Hayden Road since 2005, with weekend waits to prove it.

The Moreno family, from Hermosillo, built a glamorous Waterfront dining room around old Sonoran recipes, prime beef and agave cocktails, dressed it in Mexico's golden age of cinema, and dedicated the whole thing to the women who raised them.

Caribbean Palm
Caribbean Palm is the Jamaican restaurant and bar at 2515 N Scottsdale Road, Suites 2-4, a block north of McDowell Road in south Scottsdale. Established in 2014, it began in the old Papago Plaza across the intersection and moved to its present building around the time the plaza was razed in 2019. Curry goat, jerk chicken, braised oxtail, patties and saltfish-and-conch fritters, a full bar, and the owners Phoenix New Times called Arizona's slice of the Caribbean.

A veteran-owned, family-run Scottsdale tavern serving bold New Mexican cooking since 1995 in a cave-themed room of bats, waterfalls, and Roswell kitsch — with a late-night kitchen that made it a legendary industry hangout.

Carlson Creek Vineyard
The Old Town tasting room of one of Arizona's largest family-owned estate wineries, poured across a 20-foot copper bar in a renovated former gallery on Marshall Way: five Willcox wines for $25, rotating local art on the walls, and room for a group.

Casa Amigos
Evening Entertainment Group spent $4 million turning the former Livewire music hall into a white-walled Mexican cantina in January 2018. Today Casa Amigos runs as a tequila-fueled nightclub with a rooftop, open Tuesday through Saturday nights next door to its sister Bottled Blonde.

Catch Scottsdale
Catch Scottsdale is the seventh Catch, the seafood, sushi and steak brand that Tilman Fertitta, Mark Birnbaum and Eugene Remm's Catch Hospitality Group runs in New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Aspen, Miami Beach and Dallas. It opened Friday, September 19, 2025, in an 11,700-square-foot Rockwell Group room on the south-side porte-cochère of Scottsdale Fashion Square at 7014 E Camelback Road, Suite 612, and Phoenix New Times decided it was worth the hype.

Mark Chacón's farmers-market pastry business grew into a real bakery at Roosevelt and Hayden in late 2024, and when former Tartine head baker Nick Beitcher moved from San Francisco to run the bread program in 2025, a south Scottsdale storefront became the most serious sourdough address in the Valley.

Chada Thai AZ
Chada Thai AZ is the family Thai restaurant that Bussara 'Nina' Irwin opened as Cha Da Thai on Via Linda in 2012 and moved in November 2021 to 2765 N Scottsdale Road, Suite 107, in the Scottsdale Crossing center at Thomas Road, taking over the old Noodles Ranch pho house and keeping its pho. Boat noodle soup, hand-pounded curries, kanom jeep dumplings and homemade mango ice cream in South Scottsdale, closed Mondays.

Chef J Dim Sum & Chinese Bistro
Chef J Dim Sum & Chinese Bistro is the family-owned Chinese restaurant at 9030 E Via Linda, Suite 100, in Scottsdale Ranch, the only dim sum kitchen in the city and a Chinese-American standby for the neighborhoods around Mayo Clinic. It serves dim sum daily, an all-you-can-eat dim sum deal with a 90-minute clock, hot pot, a full bar and the orange-chicken end of the menu for the regulars.

Chin Up Donuts
Alex McEntire's woman-owned doughnut shop makes dense, buttery brioche doughnuts from scratch, in flavors that run from Lavender Fields to pepperoni pizza. After closing her original North Scottsdale shop at the end of 2025, the bright little room on Main Street is now the only Chin Up.

d'Lite Healthy On The Go is the healthy-fast-food drive-thru at 2613 N Scottsdale Road, just south of Thomas in south Scottsdale, that Brooke and Chad Knudson opened as D'Lish Drive Thru in the late 2000s and renamed around 2015. It serves breakfast sandwiches, burros, bowls, wraps, salads, burgers and protein shakes from 6 a.m., became the first multi-unit Arizona chain approved by Blue Zones Project in 2024, and now has five Valley locations.

De Babel is the halal, made-to-order Middle Eastern counter that Jordan native Marwan Kandeel opened on July 13, 2021, at 14884 N Pima Road, Suite 135, in a plaza tucked behind the Loop 101 near Raintree Drive in the Scottsdale Airpark. Dirty Dogg Saloon is the rock 'n' roll biker bar in the strip at the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Shea, a few doors from Ernie's and Oregano's: a dark room with lingerie hanging from the ceiling, dollar bills on the walls, a buffalo head and a jackalope, live local bands, a smoking patio, pool, shuffleboard and darts, open Tuesday through Saturday to 2 a.m. with happy hour from 3 to 8, and the biker-friendly bar Arizona Bike Week lists for Scottsdale.

Eagles Buffet is the all-you-can-eat room at Casino Arizona, 524 N 92nd Street at McKellips Road and the Loop 101, one of five restaurants in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community's casino building that opened in September 2000. It runs five days a week on a themed calendar: $59.95 crab legs on Wednesday, $19.95 dim sum lunches, $39.95 dinners and $29.95 weekend brunch with Bloody Marys and mimosas. It is the casino buffet that came back after 2020 when Talking Stick's did not.

Echo Coffee
Echo Coffee is the organic coffee shop and roastery at 2902 N 68th Street, Suite 135, in south Scottsdale near Thomas Road, opened in mid-2010 by Steve Belt and owned since the early 2020s by Rob Rigolfi Jr., who gives one percent of every sale to the Arizona Humane Society. It roasts on site, bakes its own pastries, opens at 6 a.m. every day, and in 2024 opened a second counter inside the Humane Society's Papago Park campus.

Élephante Scottsdale is the 12,000-square-foot coastal Italian restaurant that Nick Mathers' Wish You Were Here Group opened December 4, 2024, in the former Crate & Barrel on the south side of Scottsdale Fashion Square at 7014 E Camelback Road. It is the second Élephante after the 2018 Santa Monica original, with wood-fired pizzas, puccia bread and dips, a desert-planted indoor-outdoor room and Bar Bambino, a cocktail lounge built only for Scottsdale.

Hotel Solaya's main restaurant opened in April 2026 with a Southern accent nobody expected in Scottsdale: chef Brian Paskvan's oak-smoked meats, country hams from Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina, a 30-seat round bar and a patio looking across the Civic Center lawn. Elvira's at DC Ranch
Elvira's at DC Ranch is the Scottsdale branch of the Tubac restaurant that Elvira Rivera founded in Nogales, Sonora, in 1927. It opened in January 2025 at 20825 N Pima Road, Suite H110, on Market Street at DC Ranch, as a partnership between her grandson, chef Ruben Monroy, and restaurateur Tom Kaufman. Enzo's Italian Kitchen
Enzo's Italian Kitchen is the new name, since 2026, of Lorenzo's Italian Kitchen, the 2,000-square-foot neighborhood red-sauce room at 23623 N Scottsdale Road, Suite 4, in the Pinnacle Peak Village center at Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak roads. Restaurateur Eric J. Greenwald bought Lorenzo's in 2022 and renovated it in 2025; Enzo's says it is the same location under new management. The order is still the vodka-sauce pasta and the garlic knots.

Ernie's Inn
Ernie's Inn is the family-owned sports and karaoke bar at the corner of Scottsdale Road and Shea that has changed as little as any room in the city since it opened in 1973: karaoke every night from 8 to 2, a partly open ceiling that lets you smoke and see stars, pool, darts, shuffleboard, cheap Miller and well drinks, and Phoenix New Times' Best Dive Bar of 2021, a rare one this far north in Scottsdale.

Hummus, falafel, shawarma, Moroccan cigars, malawach and, because nobody else in town makes it, kosher sushi, under Chabad of Scottsdale supervision. A royal-blue-and-white gelateria wedged between the galleries of Main Street, where Naples native Mario Cimmino churns gelato from bases made with a gelato-maker friend in Naples, using lemons from the Amalfi coast and hazelnuts from Giffoni. George & Son's Asian Cuisine
George & Son's Asian Cuisine is a sit-down Chinese and pan-Asian restaurant at 11291 E Via Linda, in the Ancala Village center below the McDowells, opened by George Yang in the fall of 2000. Phoenix New Times named it Best Contemporary Chinese in 2001 for a menu that borrows from Burma, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The seafood pocket, the honey-glazed walnut shrimp and the $7.95 lunch combinations are why the east side keeps coming back.

George's Famous Gyros
George's Famous Gyros is a counter-service Greek shop at 7620 E McKellips Road, Unit 6, in a South Scottsdale strip center near the Tempe line. George Salvaridis, a first-generation Greek from Chicago, opened it in 2006, won Phoenix New Times' Best Gyro in 2011, and sold it about 2018. The gyro, the Gyro Picado and the fries are the reason to go.

Goldie's Sports Cafe
Goldie's Sports Cafe has been the family-owned sports bar of Scottsdale Ranch since 1993, in the Mercado at Scottsdale Ranch across Via Linda from Scottsdale Ranch Park. Downstairs is a big family dining room, a kids' arcade and a misted patio; upstairs is adults only, with pool, darts and shuffleboard. It is the older sister of Zipps Sports Grills, run by the same Scottsdale family, and the cheapest good seat for a game on the east side.

Green Corner Restaurant is the fast-casual Syrian and Lebanese counter at 10392 N Scottsdale Road, just south of Shea in the Scottsdale Commons center, opened in late May 2022 in the former Porkopolis Bar-B-Que space. Syrian chef-owner Ebrahim Takkem and his nephew Ash Abu Sharkh started the brand in Mesa in 2016; this was their third location. Kasai Japanese Steakhouse is the 11,000-square-foot teppanyaki house at 14344 N Scottsdale Road near Acoma Drive, the torch-lit building that was Sapporo from 2001 until Mike Russello and Patrick King rebranded it in November 2018. Fourteen hibachi tables seat 146 for a seven-course dinner show. The Russello family sold it in 2026 to EDGI, a Scottsdale group led by Robert Stidham, which plans to franchise the concept.

Salt River Café is the 24-hour café inside Casino Arizona, 524 N 92nd Street at McKellips Road and the Loop 101, on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community's land. It was already the casino's casual eatery when Phoenix New Times reviewed the new building's dining in February 2001, and it serves breakfast sandwiches, burgers, pizza, Asian bowls, frybread tacos and a late-night menu around the clock at $10 to $20 an entrée. Taqueria Centro is the casual Arizona-Mexican restaurant at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia, 4949 E Lincoln Drive in Paradise Valley, set off the Kasbah Pool with Camelback Mountain through three walls of glass. Its menu of fish, carne asada, squash blossom, tinga and quesabirria tacos was written by chef Laura Gonzalez, who won Food Network's Chopped in September 2018, and is now credited to executive chef Marcos Seville. The Italian Daughter Cucina + Cocktails is the north Scottsdale Italian restaurant Melissa Maggiore Meyer opened in April 2021 at 23655 N Scottsdale Road, Suite 120, at Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak roads, in the trattoria her father Tomaso Maggiore opened in 2017 and in his honor after his death that winter. The Italiano is the 7,543-square-foot old-school Italian restaurant that chef Joey Maggiore's Maggiore Group opened on September 20, 2024, at 9301 E Shea Boulevard, at 90th Street. The Local Donut is Daniel Tes's doughnut shop at 3213 N Hayden Road, between Thomas and Osborn in south Scottsdale, open since early 2016. It won Best Doughnut in Phoenix New Times' 2019 Best of Phoenix for its crème brûlée doughnut, led the paper's 2025 list of the Valley's best doughnut shops, and in July 2026 nearly closed when a slow summer left it unable to make payroll, until a social-media plea filled the room the next morning.

The Lunch Bag is a lunch-only sandwich shop at 8989 E Via Linda, Suite 116, near 90th Street in Scottsdale Ranch, that has traded under that name since 1981. Thirsty Camel is the lobby lounge of The Phoenician, Charles Keating's 1988 resort at the foot of Camelback Mountain, and the one bar on the property that calls itself a place for locals as well as guests. Axis-Radius was Les and Diane Corieri's twin nightclub on Indian Plaza: Axis opened as a cigar and martini bar in August 1997, Radius added a two-level dance club next door in November 1998, and for 16 years the pair was the club that made a block of empty offices into Scottsdale's Entertainment District. It closed after a last party on June 29, 2013, and Bottled Blonde and Casa Amigos now fill the building.

Blue Clover Distillery was the restaurant and micro-distillery that replaced Eddie Matney's Eddie's House at 7042 E Indian School Road, on the corner of Marshall Way in Old Town. Distiller and part-owner Weston Holm opened it in late February 2018 with two copper pot stills in view of the dining room and a New Mexican-leaning kitchen. It closed in late 2023, and One Handsome Bastard took over the stills and the recipes.

Blue Wasabi Sushi & Martini Bar was owner Jim Moran's locally grown sushi-and-cocktails chain, best known in Scottsdale for its room at The Shops at Hilton Village, 6137 N Scottsdale Road near Lincoln Drive. It sold blue-tinted wasabi, rolls with names like Eating Nemo and the Chuck Norris Roll, and blueberry martinis. Breakfast Kitchen Bar was Sam Ashek and Samer Alkhairi's brunch-and-cocktails concept, opened at Scottsdale Quarter by early 2017 and moved in 2023 to 15600 N Hayden Road, Building B, at the Northsight traffic circle, where it seated up to 270. It served shrimp scampi omelets, churro waffles and a keto menu until early 2026, when listings began marking it closed. The Desert Ridge store in Phoenix carried the name on.

BS West was the two-story gay bar, dance floor and drag club just off Craftsman Court at 7125 E Fifth Ave, open from 1988 and for most of its life the only LGBTQ bar in Scottsdale. Its owners closed it on January 7, 2024, after 35 years, saying rent and liquor-liability insurance had outrun them since COVID. Nothing has replaced it in Old Town.

Buddha's Ritual
Buddha's Ritual was the Asian-American fusion restaurant that Scott and Melissa McIntire's Mac Entertainment Group opened in early 2022 on the ground floor of SOHO Scottsdale, at 16580 N 92nd Street near WestWorld, with radio host Joey Boy Rodriguez and entrepreneur Freddy Nguyen as partners. It served croffles, pho, kimchi mac and cheese and wood-fired pizza for about six months and was gone by August 2022. Its chef reopened the room as Sugo Bistro in April 2023.

Buzz: The Original Funbar
Buzz, the Original Funbar, was the 19,000-square-foot, two-level dance club at 10345 N Scottsdale Road near Shea that opened in 1997 as an upscale room and became the Valley's 18-and-over institution, open until 4 a.m. and, on summer Wednesdays, running an alcohol-free teen night for 15-to-20-year-olds. Cajun House was the $8 million, 25,000-square-foot New Orleans fantasy that opened on Third Avenue in March 1997: a four-level concert hall and theme restaurant with a cobblestone Bourbon Street, a bayou, oyster and piano bars and a stage that hosted Wilco, Iggy Pop and Cheap Trick. Renamed the Venue of Scottsdale around 2004 and The Venue Scottsdale in 2010, it went out of business around 2019 and was torn down for the AC Hotel that opened on the site in 2026.

Campo Italian Bistro & Bar was the Genuine Concepts restaurant that James Beard winner Alex Stratta opened on June 1, 2021 at 8260 N Hayden Road, Suite A102, on the northwest corner of Hayden and Via de Ventura in McCormick Ranch, in the space where his Stratta Kitchen had lasted eight months. House-made pasta, pizza, a green-and-wood room by designer Trina Boyd and a shaded patio. Stratta left for Belmont in 2025, and Campo served its last dinner on Friday, July 31, 2026.

Canal
Canal was the second-floor SouthBridge restaurant that developer Fred Unger opened on October 16, 2007, at 7144 E Stetson Drive on the Arizona Canal, with a color-shifting catwalk through the dining room and chef Justin Beckett's 30 Dollar Sandwich on the menu. Critics liked the food more than the scene. It closed in 2009, a restaurant called Acua followed in the space, and Beckett went on to open Beckett's Table.

A Phoenix family's 1978 Mexican-with-an-Irish-name institution opened its Scottsdale branch at Scottsdale Road and Bell in 1998 — three dining rooms, a pub, a patio, and pollo fundido — and ran there for more than two decades before the 'Scottsdale' Carlos O'Brien's moved across the line to Mayo Boulevard in Phoenix.

Cask 63 American Eatery & Wine Bar
Cask 63 American Eatery & Wine Bar was the 6,500-square-foot New American restaurant that two Eddie V's veterans, manager Jerry Tingle and chef Brian Feirstein, opened in January 2012 in Fox Restaurant Concepts' old Bloom space at The Shops at Gainey Village, 8877 N Scottsdale Road. It lasted 16 months: in May 2013 the landlord took possession for lease defaults. Naya Mediterranean Cuisine followed, and Lure Fish House holds the room today.

Clever Ramen was the fast-casual ramen and bao counter that Born & Raised Hospitality, the Clever Koi team of Joshua James and Nick Campisano, opened at SkySong, 1455 N Scottsdale Road, in early 2022. You built your own bowl from noodles, broth and toppings under a curved plywood ceiling shaped like noodles. It closed abruptly on July 1, 2024, and Shio Ramen & Crudo took the space in 2025.

Coyote Cafe
Coyote Cafe was the Southwestern restaurant Moe and Laurie Vacha opened on November 11, 1986, at 7373 E Scottsdale Mall on the Civic Center lawn, the year Southwestern cooking arrived in the Valley. Phoenix New Times held it in high esteem until the couple divorced and Laurie left in 1991. By December 1993 Laguna Cafe had its storefront, the first of a run of tenants that made the space notorious.

Cuoco Pazzo, Italian for crazy cook, was the Roman-style restaurant chef Peter DeRuvo opened in fall 2011 with father-and-son owners Mario Rana Sr. and Jr. at 4175 N Goldwater Blvd, on the west edge of Old Town. Critics loved the pastas and whole-animal feasts, but DeRuvo left after four months, the room became T. Roosevelt's Tavern, and the Ranas sold it in March 2013. Evo has occupied it since.

Cuttlefish Ocean Kitchen
Cuttlefish Ocean Kitchen was Joey Maggiore's coastal Italian seafood restaurant at the Shops at Gainey Village, 8777 N Scottsdale Road, opened in late November 2013 by the son of Tomaso's founder Tomaso Maggiore. It had 100 seats and a raw bar lined with eleven Vespas. In July 2015, after less than two years, Maggiore closed it and turned the room into the first Hash Kitchen.

Dakota was Shawn Yari's attempt to make one room do a whole day: a 4,500-square-foot California bistro at 7301 E Indian Plaza, between the W Scottsdale and Maya, that served organic breakfast from 7 a.m. and turned into a DJ-and-bottle-service club at night. Reported open on December 31, 2014, it was described as closed by December 2019, and The REMI hotel rose on the parcel in 2025.

Davanti Enoteca was the Scottsdale branch of a Chicago small-plates wine bar, opened in August 2012 by Francesca's Restaurants Group in the old Quilted Bear at 6316 N Scottsdale Road with chef Peter DeRuvo in the kitchen. Devil's Martini was the martini lounge that Canadian owners Richard and Delania Geddes brought from Toronto to Old Town in 2001, in a squat yellow-brick building with arched windows at 4175 N Goldwater Boulevard, then cloned at 10825 N Scottsdale Road in 2003. New Times gave its sweet, vodka-based martinis the Best Martini award in 2003. Both Scottsdale rooms closed the same weekend in February 2011 after a downturn and lost customers; the Toronto original stayed open.

It survived its parent company's breakup and a bankruptcy, was bought and remodeled by RDM Hospitality in 2024, and served its last dinner on January 3, 2026. Famous 48 was Square One Concepts' tavern, opened in October 2017 in Old Town's former Crab & Mermaid space and moved in December 2018 to a bigger room at The Shops at Gainey Village, 8989 N Scottsdale Road, Suite 608. Farrelli's Cinema Supper Club
Farrelli's Cinema Supper Club was Tom and Wendy Farrelli's restaurant and movie theater in a strip center at 14202 N Scottsdale Road, near Thunderbird Road on the Phoenix line. It opened in 2001, three months before 9/11, served full dinners in two small booth-lined theaters, and for most of a decade was the Valley's only dinner-and-a-movie house. Fratelli la Bufala was the Scottsdale franchise of a Campania pizzeria chain founded in 2003, opened in spring 2023 by franchisee Fabio Sodano at The Grove, 7300 N Via Paseo del Sur near Hayden Road and McCormick Parkway. It was the brand's second U.S. restaurant after Miami: 4,200 square feet, 160 seats and a wood-burning oven. It closed in September 2025, and DiMaggio's Italian Restaurant moved in that October.

Fred's was the white-tablecloth restaurant on the second floor of Barneys New York at Scottsdale Fashion Square, 7014 E Camelback Road, opened with the store in October 2009 as the third Fred's after New York and Chicago. It served a mostly Mediterranean menu to shoppers above Scottsdale Road and closed on September 9, 2011. Barneys followed in 2016, and an Apple Store now fills the building.

Gabriella's Contemporary American Cuisine was the 40-seat bistro that Bay Area caterers Anthony and Anna Barr opened in August 2020 at 10155 E Via Linda, Suite H134, in the Mercado at Scottsdale Ranch, after COVID-19 shut down their 50-person events business. It served short rib grilled cheese, sweet corn and wild mushroom tamales and Tomahawk Tuesdays for about two years; La Fonda del Sol moved into the suite by spring 2023.

Gastromé Market was a 5,000-square-foot gourmet market, cheese and wine shop and restaurant that Tiffany Chavez and Jenny Le opened in September 2022 at 7704 E Doubletree Ranch Road in the Shops at Gainey Ranch. It drew influencers and good reviews for its cheese counter and cocktails, then announced on January 31, 2023, that it would close in two weeks. Corso Italia followed in the space from 2024 to 2026.

Gina's Homemade was the fresh-cheese shop that Gina and Chris Buskirk opened in June 2012 at 10953 N Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard, Suite 105, in Palo Verde Square just north of Shea, after two years of selling burrata, mozzarella and biscotti at the Old Town farmers market. It sold house cheeses, ready-to-bake pizzas and soups, and supplied AJ's, Whole Foods and Beckett's Table. The shop closed without press notice in the mid-2010s; its suite became Jerusalem Bakery, now Lior the Baker.

It opened in October 2016 to give the Tuesday ramen nights at his fine-dining room Posh a home of their own, and it closed on March 27, 2021, when Hebert declined to sign another five-year lease in the pandemic.

The Phoenician converted its all-American Terrace restaurant into a regional Italian room in June 2008 — the same year it closed Mary Elaine's — and Il Terrazzo served handmade gnocchi, saltimbocca, and Sunday brunch on the resort's terrace for nine years before a 2017 renovation turned the space into Mowry & Cotton.

Indulge Burgers & More was the build-your-own burger shop owner Lee Klein opened in 2008 at 10392 N Scottsdale Road, in the Scottsdale Commons strip just south of Shea Boulevard. Diners checked boxes on a menu sheet for the patty, bun, cheese, toppings and sauce, or ordered signatures like the cheese-stuffed Vesuvius Volcanic. Jetz was the high-energy restaurant-bar that Les Corieri and developer Mark Drinkwater opened in 1992 in the aging Camelback Mall strip, and Stixx was the pool hall they added next door in 1993 that was really a nightclub with nice tables. Johnny T's Brooklyn Pizzeria
Johnny T's Brooklyn Pizzeria was the New York-style slice shop at 7132 E Becker Lane, on the northwest corner of Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard, that opened in December 2024 in the space of Andiamo Pizzeria, the strip-mall pizzeria that went viral in the spring of 2024 and never reopened. One of Andiamo's owners ran it with much the same menu. It closed in February 2026, citing labor, food costs and rent.

JoJo's ShakeBAR
JoJo's ShakeBAR was the Chicago-born '80s-and-'90s diner and bar that opened at Scottsdale Quarter, 15037 N Scottsdale Road, Suite J150, on July 15, 2023, in the old Stingray Sushi space: 200 seats, a Pac-Man ceiling, arcade games and milkshakes stacked with whole desserts, boozy if you asked. Founder Robbie Schloss's only Arizona location closed in October 2025 after two years, with no reason given.

Jokake Inn Tea Room
The Jokake Inn began as Sylvia Evans's tea parties in a 1926 adobe house below Camelback Mountain and grew into a winter resort whose dining room fed Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Frank Lloyd Wright and Ava Gardner until the inn closed in the late 1970s and The Phoenician rose on its ground.

An 8,000-square-foot gastropub on the canal side of SouthBridge that opened in 2012, won Best Burger in the Valley from two magazines in 2013 for its Four Cut Burger, and owned one of Old Town's best people-watching patios before closing quietly. The space anchored the 6th Avenue stretch between the Waterfront and Stetson Drive.

La Fonda del Sol was the family-owned Sonoran Mexican restaurant at 7223 E Shea Boulevard, on the southeast corner of Shea and Scottsdale Road, that by its own account opened in 1978 and had the same owners from 1990. New Times named it Scottsdale's best neighborhood Mexican restaurant in 2008 and wrote up its $9.95 lunch buffet in 2015. It moved to the Mercado at Scottsdale Ranch in 2023, changed hands, and closed in May 2026.

The Boulders' signature restaurant in its main lodge — a semi-circular room roofed in ocotillo branches, with picture windows on the resort's twelve-million-year-old boulder pile — served modern American tasting menus from its own organic garden until the resort closed it in 2015 and turned the room into a ballroom.

Liquor Pig
Liquor Pig was the 80-seat gastropub that chef Steven 'Chops' Smith and sommelier Scott Casey opened in March 2025 in a 1950s house at 7217 E 4th Avenue in Old Town Scottsdale. It won best-new-restaurant honors from Phoenix Magazine and Phoenix New Times, lost both founders within ten months, became the subject of a lawsuit, and closed on May 30, 2026. The same owners reopened the house a week later as Wayward.

Livewire
Livewire was Evening Entertainment Group's attempt to give Old Town a real concert hall: an 11,000-square-foot, 1,130-capacity room built inside the Radius half of the old Axis-Radius at 7340 E Indian Plaza. It opened on December 27, 2014 with Jared and the Mill, hosted Jeff Bridges, Steve Aoki, Joe Jonas and Lil Wayne, and closed after Bone Thugs-N-Harmony on July 3, 2017. The building was gutted that month for Casa Amigos and Skylanes.

Mabel's on Main was chef Aaron May's dark, Mad Men-styled cocktail lounge at 7018 E Main St, built out of the old Mabel Murphy's bar at the end of 2009: walnut wainscoting, chocolate leather booths, a pressed-tin ceiling, a VIP room behind a secret bookshelf door and some of Old Town's most serious cocktails. May sold it in August 2014 to Genuine Concepts, who kept the room and reopened it as The Beverly, which still pours there.

Macayo's Scottsdale
Macayo's Scottsdale was the Scottsdale Road store of the Phoenix Mexican chain Woody and Victoria Johnson founded in 1946, at 11107 N Scottsdale Road near Shea Boulevard. It was the chain's last Scottsdale outpost when it served its last meals on August 19, 2017, at the end of its lease. The opening year is not recorded in the press we found. A later Macayo's at Loop 101 and Shea opened in 2021 and is no longer listed.

Mancuso's at the Borgata
The Mancuso family's grand Italian-continental dining room anchored the Borgata's faux-Tuscan towers for over two decades — tuxedoed service, veal scaloppine, and every prom and anniversary on the books — until redevelopment forced it out in 2005.

Marco Polo Supper Club
Marco Polo Supper Club was the Italian-Chinese dinner house at 8608 E Shea Blvd in the Pima Crossing center, opened in 1995 when the original Marco Polo Cafe on Camelback gave way to Nordstrom. The group that ran it opened Mastro's Steakhouse in 1999. It closed in April 2003 and reopened in 2004 as a revived What's Your Beef; the address later held Maloney's, Scottsdale Beer Company and Macayo's.

Metro Brasserie & Bar was the rustic French brasserie with a New Orleans accent that developer Fred Unger opened in October 2008 in the SouthBridge space on Stetson Drive where his sandwich shop Foodbar had failed, next door to Digestif. Chef Matt Taylor, a veteran of John Besh's New Orleans kitchens, opened it. Critics found it uneven but loved the burger and beignets. It closed in February 2011.

Chef Michael DeMaria's elegant dining room in the Citadel complex below Pinnacle Peak was north Scottsdale's premier special-occasion restaurant of the late 1990s and 2000s, famous for its romantic waterfall courtyard and chef's-table cooking classes.

Mickey's Hangover
Mickey's Hangover was Randy Smith's deliberately trashy late-night dive on North Brown Avenue, the cheap, couch-filled antidote to his own velvet-rope SIX Lounge, serving sliders, cheese fries and nachos until 3 a.m. through the 2000s. It closed for good on July 31, 2009, three months after SIX, over unpaid rent and the recession. The Firehouse, a sports bar and 4 a.m. dance club, took the building from about 2010 to June 2014; Social Tap has it now.

Mon Cheri was the pink, rose-covered champagne cafe and charcuterie bar that founder Lexi Caliskan opened in March 2024 in a 1953 house at 7014 E 1st Avenue, just east of Goldwater Boulevard in Old Town. Built for bachelorette parties and photographs, it served boards, burrata and pink cocktails, made headlines for a burglary in 2025, and closed in March 2026 amid the owner's legal and financial troubles.

Myst (formerly Sanctuary)
Myst was the Old Town nightclub on Shoeman Lane that opened in August 1999 as Sanctuary, a 14,000-square-foot Moroccan fantasy with a 200-year-old monastery door, and was bought and remade by Les and Diane Corieri as Myst in 2004. It closed with its sister lounge Suede on May 15, 2012, and both were torn down for the pool club Maya, which stands on the block today.

Nonna Urban Eatery
A matchbox-size courtyard room at the east end of Main Street where chef Gian Franco Brugaletta, formerly head sushi chef at Buddha-Bar Monte-Carlo, cooked handmade Italian pasta with Japanese instincts while his wife Valentina Huerta ran a wine list heavy on Arizona bottles. It closed in 2022 and Gio Osso's Piccolo Virtù took the space.

Nourish
Nourish was owner Kirstin Carey's gluten-free, soy-free and peanut-free cafe on the ground floor of Optima Camelview Village, the plant-draped condos just north of Scottsdale Fashion Square. It opened in May 2010, cooked without open flames, color-coded every dish by allergen, and taught classes as Nourish 123. It closed quietly in May 2014 when the landlord wanted the space for something else.

Oaxaca / Vincent's French Cuisine
Around 1980, in the Nelson family's new Pinnacle Peak Plaza, a restaurant called Oaxaca tried to serve French and Mexican food from one kitchen, with mariachis. Its French chef was Vincent Guerithault, recruited from Jean Banchet's Le Français outside Chicago. The double concept flopped. The Mexican side moved upstairs, Guerithault took the ground floor as Vincent's French Cuisine, and in 1981 Craig Claiborne praised it in the New York Times, making it, by Phoenix New Times's account, the first independent restaurant in the Valley to win national fame. Guerithault left for Camelback Road in 1986, and Le Relais took over his room. Upstairs, Oaxaca was still serving, as the Vistas at Oaxaca, in 1992.

OEB Breakfast Co.
OEB Breakfast Co. was the first U.S. location of chef Mauro Martina's Calgary breakfast chain, opened in November 2019 at 17757 N Scottsdale Road, Suite 103, near Chauncey Lane, just south of the 101. It put truffles, lobster crepes, fried duck on waffles and a whole category of breakfast poutine on the morning menu, with Vital Farms eggs. It closed in September 2026 after six years, and The Breakfast Table took the space.

Paul Shank's Gracious Dining was the gourmet room of the Safari Hotel at 4611 N Scottsdale Road, the flaming-sword dining room that Colorado restaurateur Paul Shank opened in 1960 and ran until 1980, alongside his French Quarter lounge and the northeast Valley's first 24-hour coffee shop. Barry Goldwater, Sonny and Cher and the spring-training Red Sox ate there. The hotel closed in 1998 and was demolished in 1999.

The third restaurant from Virtù Honest Craft chef Gio Osso opened in December 2022 in the former Nonna Urban Eatery courtyard on Main Street, serving crudo, handmade pasta and large-format entrees a la carte. Osso closed it with 'mixed emotions' after one year, in December 2023, and folded his attention back into Virtù and Pizzeria Virtù.

A chef-driven gastropub at Hayden and Thomas that gave unglamorous south Scottsdale a legitimate craft kitchen — whole-animal butchery, house pickles, serious burgers, and local beer — until a landlord locked the doors in July 2019, still mourned by the neighborhood.

Pink Taco
Pink Taco, Harry Morton's Los Angeles cantina brand, opened its second restaurant at the new Scottsdale Waterfront in June 2006, after a spring in which Mayor Mary Manross asked it to change its name, the company said no, and the City Council recommended its liquor license anyway. Morton took the fight to The Daily Show, and Sheriff Joe Arpaio held a press conference on its patio. It lasted less than three years: the Arizona Republic reported it closed on April 1, 2009, as the chain pulled back to Southern California. Sam Fox gutted the space and opened the first Culinary Dropout there in January 2010.

It poured about 20 craft and Trappist beers on tap and cooked an ever-changing American menu. It shut on October 8, 2013, and the room became Bootleggers, which is still there.

Pulque Fine Mexican Cuisine was chef Danny Medina's 48-seat, white-tablecloth Mexican restaurant at 9619 N Hayden Road, Suite 108, on the southeast corner of Hayden and Mountain View. Medina, a Chihuahua native who had cooked at Dominick's and The Capital Grille, opened it in December 2020 with moles from Puebla and Oaxaca. Pussycat Lounge
The Pussycat Lounge was the Old Town danceteria at Saddlebag Trail and Indian Plaza that served, in Phoenix New Times' words, the stylish and the skinny for the better part of a decade, with stripper poles on the floor and a cowboy-hatted woman for a logo. Owner Ryan Jocque sold it in December 2011 to London club operator Joe Fournier, who closed it June 30, 2012 and rebuilt it as EPIQ. EPIQ lasted a year; CAKE has held the corner since 2014.

Rattlers
Rattlers was the 10,000-square-foot cowboy steakhouse built inside WestWorld of Scottsdale, 16601 N Pima Rd, overlooking the polo grounds, with room for 1,200 diners, a country band and a dance floor. The city dates its grand opening to December 1990. Refurbished as Diamondback Steakhouse by late 1994, it was defunct by 2001, and WestWorld no longer runs a public restaurant.

Relish Burger Bistro
Relish Burger Bistro was The Phoenician's casual burger restaurant, opened in spring 2010 by executive chef Paul Carter on the second floor of the Golf Clubhouse at 6000 E Camelback Road. It served eight-ounce Kobe patties on housemade brioche with tater tots, house sodas, adult shakes and one of the largest tequila lists in the region until it closed for renovation in June 2018. General Admission, a Los Angeles sports gastropub, has been promised for the space for fall 2026.

Roy's Scottsdale was the Arizona debut of Hawaii chef Roy Yamaguchi's Pacific Rim chain, opened in January 1998 in a former Marilyn's at Scottsdale Seville, 7001 N Scottsdale Road. A franchise partner built it; Outback Steakhouse Inc. bought it in 2002. It turned ten in February 2008 with Yamaguchi in the kitchen, and by November 2010 Taberna Mexicana had its space.

Saddle Ranch Chop House, the 'rock-western' restaurant and bar that put a mechanical bull on Hollywood's Sunset Strip in 1999, opened its first Arizona location in January 2008 at 4321 N. Scottsdale Rd, a 1963 building at the edge of Old Town's bar district. It brought the bull with it. Nobody recorded the closing; by late 2014 the building was empty and Two Brothers Brewing was taking it over. The bull went with the remodel. Barstool Scottsdale has had the building since November 2022.

Saint Urban
Saint Urban was chef Christopher Collins' neighborhood wine bar at 8260 N Hayden Road in the Mercado at Hayden center, opened November 22, 2024, in the former Rockefeller's space beside his Grassroots and Collins Brothers. It poured 30 rotating West Coast wines by the glass with oysters, bruschetta and a tri-tip sandwich. It closed as a restaurant on September 28, 2026, and the room now books private events.

Salty Señorita
A tacos-and-tequila patio that spent ten years in its original Old Town spot, moved up Scottsdale Road into the old Billet Bar in December 2013 with a new chef and sixteen margarita flavors, and served nearly another decade before closing in summer 2023. The building has sat empty since.

The Hyatt Regency Scottsdale's lagoon-side Italian trattoria, where the point wasn't the pasta — it was the complimentary gondola ride afterward, poled across the Gainey Ranch waterways by your singing server.

Santé was the organic, regenerative-sourcing restaurant that EVO founder Nick Neuman and health coach Nico Doniele opened on December 14, 2021, at 15507 N Scottsdale Road, in a 5,000-square-foot former Brunch Cafe just north of Kierland. It made Phoenix New Times' Top 100 and closed after service on June 4, 2023. EVO North Scottsdale, Neuman's Italian room, has occupied the space since October 2023.

For about eighteen years, three gas torches marked the entrance to Sapporo, an 11,000-square-foot Japanese restaurant near Scottsdale Road and Acoma Drive that split itself between hibachi theater, a busy sushi bar, and a weekend lounge scene before its owners rebranded it as Kasai in November 2018.

For 14 years, a purpose-built Mediterranean stone villa in the Pinnacle Peak foothills served refined southern-Italian cooking and hosted half of Arizona's dream weddings — until its owners retired and closed the restaurant in June 2018.

Scottsdale Beer Company
Scottsdale Beer Company was the Shea Corridor's own brewpub, a 10-to-12-tap industrial room at 8608 E Shea Blvd in the Pima Crossing center, set so far back from the street that a Chili's hid it. Its Cannonball pale ale won at the 2017 Great American Beer Festival. It opened around 2014 and closed in the first months of the pandemic in 2020; Macayo's took the space in June 2021.

A tiny 28-seat Japanese tapas counter on Stetson Drive where chef Nobuo Fukuda cooked some of the most acclaimed food in Arizona history, winning the 2007 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest before closing in 2009.

Searsucker
Top Chef finalist Brian Malarkey and nightlife partner James Brennan brought their San Diego gastrolounge to a 9,500-square-foot room at Camelback and Goldwater in fall 2012; a year later the group pulled out to refocus its portfolio. Leather, cowhide, cheddar puffers and a nightclub pulse, gone before most locals found it.

For a decade, Old Town's craft-cocktail pioneer hid up a staircase off Scottsdale Road, pairing speakeasy rigor with fine-dining plates until owner Tommy Plato closed it in May 2024 to launch The Ends.

Sel
Chef-owner Branden Levine's tiny French dining room on Main Street, among Old Town's art galleries, was best known for a five-course prix fixe in three parallel paths, Garden, Land and Sea, so a vegetarian and a steak eater got equally serious dinners. A 2025 renovation made it Sel Bistro, with an à la carte menu. In late July 2026 it closed for what was billed as a summer break; in August it announced it would not reopen, after ten years.

SIX Lounge
SIX was the 5,000-square-foot ultra-lounge on Stetson Drive that Randy Smith opened in 2001: neon light, model-grade servers, a unisex bathroom with glass doors that went opaque when you shut them, and a spot on national best-bar lists. It closed in April 2009 after a rent dispute, in the recession that also took Mickey's Hangover, Barcelona and Sugar Daddy's, and its space ran through Revolver and Ellure before becoming a salon.

Smashboxx
Smashboxx was the lounge and video bar that promoter Chad Landau and a few veterans of the Pussycat Lounge opened on November 4, 2010, at 7419 E. Indian Plaza in Old Town's entertainment district. It rarely charged a cover, ran a video booth called the Hotboxx, and threw its last party on May 2, 2014. Its room had already been Lyte Lounge (2008–09) and Howl at the Moon's dueling pianos (2009–10), and after it came BLUR, the Blind Dragon karaoke lounge and, since 2022, 50 Shades of Rosé. Next door, the older Crown Room lounge ran from at least 2005 until 2011, when Landau rebuilt it as Dollhouse.

Sonata's Restaurant
Lithuanian-born Sonata Molocajeviene Tuft and her family opened a lavish Eastern European dining room at Scottsdale Road and Gold Dust in October 2016 — pierogi, potato pancakes with salmon, roast duck, a wall of vodka and live music four nights a week — and ran it for nearly a decade before it closed.

Sorso Wine Room
For ten years Scottsdale Quarter's anchor wine bar handed you a card and a wall of enomatic machines, dozens of wines poured by the ounce, self-serve, with flatbreads and boards in a room built for groups and grazers. It opened in April 2015 with 32 wines on tap and closed in late April 2025.

Starlite BBQ
Starlite BBQ was the smokehouse that chef Walter Sterling and the team behind central Phoenix's Ocotillo opened in February 2018 at 7620 E Indian School Road, at Miller Road on the east edge of Old Town. It smoked over pecan and mesquite, broke barbecue's rules on purpose, and poured a serious whiskey list. It closed abruptly in October 2024; Bad Jimmy's smash-burger bar took the space in March 2025.

Stax Burger Bistro
A modern slider lounge at Scottsdale and Camelback from the team behind the Breakfast Club, Stax let you build mini burgers from beef, turkey, salmon, lamb, veal, buffalo or ostrich with dozens of toppings including foie gras and pineapple. It closed quietly around the turn of 2018 with a note promising a new concept.

Stingray Sushi
A small, loud, stylish sushi bar on Scottsdale Road that opened in 2003, spun off a four-location Valley brand, and closed its Old Town original in fall 2014 when the lease ran out and the owners admitted they had outgrown the room. Farm & Craft took the space.

Suede
Suede was Les and Diane Corieri's 3,500-square-foot ultra-lounge at 7333 E Indian Plaza, opened in 2001 across the street from their Axis-Radius: padded walls, cherry wood, two bars under teardrop lights and a sound system built for resident DJs. It outlived most of the district's lounges, then closed with its sister club Myst on May 15, 2012 and was demolished for Maya, which stands on the block today.

Sugar Daddy's
Sugar Daddy's was the New Orleans-themed bar that Brian Roehrich's Dos Gringos company opened in 2002 at 3102 N Scottsdale Road, south of Old Town: Old Town Scottsdale meets Bourbon Street, as Phoenix New Times put it. Mike Tyson was arrested leaving it in 2006, its founder went to prison for skimming its cover charges, and it closed in May 2009 after seven years. Oregano's occupies the site.

Sun Dial Coffee Shop
When the Executive House Arizonian opened on Scottsdale Road in fall 1961, its Sun Dial coffee shop stayed open until 2 a.m. and became a locals' room as much as a hotel one — the casual counterpart to the Fountain Room supper club and La Roca lounge in the property that is now The Scott.

Super Chunk Sweets & Treats
Cowboy Ciao's pastry chef Country Velador and her husband Sergio ran a small-batch candy shop, bakery and lunch counter on 6th Avenue for eight years — duck-fat toffee, mesquite chocolate chip cookies, house-made licorice and fruit roll-ups — until the lease ran out in February 2022.

From 1994 until the mid-2020s, Sushi on Shea was the neighborhood Japanese restaurant at Scottsdale Road and Shea — a calm, slightly upscale sushi bar with a real cooked menu, soba, udon and hot pots, that outlasted three waves of Scottsdale sushi fashion before quietly going dark.

Store No. 31 on McDowell Road near Hayden was the last mission-style Taco Bell in Arizona and one of fewer than ten in the country — a brick cantina with a tile roof and a bell-less belfry that served south Scottsdale for nearly sixty years before closing in April 2025.

Taggia
Taggia was the coastal Italian restaurant of Kimpton's FireSky Resort & Spa at 4925 N Scottsdale Road, opened March 12, 2007, under chef Claudio Urciuoli and run through four more chefs until Classic Hotels bought the resort in 2016 and rebuilt the room as The Canal Club at The Scott. It is remembered for a star chef who left in three months, a $5 amaro happy hour, and a dining room of chandeliers and round booths.

Taneko Japanese Tavern
Taneko Japanese Tavern was P.F. Chang's attempt at a second chain, a Japanese izakaya the Scottsdale company opened at The Borgata, 6166 N Scottsdale Road, in fall 2006. Under red lanterns and heavy beams it served sake flights, wood-roasted fish and the tableside Hot Rock. A sale to Dallas restaurateur Jack Baum fell through in spring 2008, Chang's closed it that July, and Fox Restaurant Concepts opened Blanco Tacos + Tequila in the space.

Tanzy
Tanzy was the 8,000-square-foot modern Mediterranean restaurant that the iPic Theaters company opened on New Year's Day 2011 next to its luxury cinema, upstairs at Scottsdale Quarter, 15257 N Scottsdale Road. Glass walls faced the McDowell Mountains and a 27-year-old chef made mozzarella from curd. It closed with the theater on January 30, 2020, after iPic's bankruptcy; Landmark Theatres reopened the complex in December 2021.

TapHouse Kitchen was the craft-beer gastropub that opened in spring 2014 in the former Blue Wasabi at 6137 N Scottsdale Road in The Shops at Hilton Village, with chef Patrick Karvis pairing a beer and a wine with every dish. It survived a 2019 expansion, a 2020 sale, a bankruptcy closure, a 2023 reopening as Urge Taphouse Kitchen and a 2024 rebrand under Eppig Brewing before Phoenix Magazine reported it had gone dark in July 2025.

Tesoro Ristorante Italiano
Tesoro Ristorante Italiano was the 45-seat, 12-table family restaurant that Anthony and Filomena Di Franco opened about 2005 at 11219 E Via Linda, Suite D1, in Ancala Village, after selling their 120-seat south Scottsdale trattoria Molise. Anthony and daughter Sonia cooked, Ania and Maurizio waited tables, and New Times named it Best Corner Italian Restaurant in 2007. It closed around 2018, and Indian restaurants have occupied the suite since.

The Bamboo Club
The Bamboo Club Asian Bistro was the Shea Corridor's answer to the P.F. Chang's era — a roughly 100-seat pan-Asian room at 8624 E Shea Blvd with a patio, a fireplace lounge, a busy happy hour, and a private-party trade that made it a Scottsdale Ranch standby before it closed, along with its Desert Ridge sibling.

Veteran and butcher Doug Smith ran a four-year reservation-only steakhouse in north Scottsdale before opening The Bourbon Cellar at Scottsdale Road and Pinnacle Peak in late 2018 — hand-cut beef, elk and bison from his own shop, seafood flown in daily, and 300 bourbon labels — until the brick-and-mortar closed in the early 2020s.

Old Town's flagship modern tiki bar — a dark, bamboo-lined hideout on Stetson Drive serving flaming rum drinks in ceramic monkey mugs with Polynesian-fusion bites, from March 2019 until the owners confirmed its permanent closure in July 2025.

The Estate House
The Estate House was developer Fred Unger's third restaurant at SouthBridge, a three-level, mansion-styled dining house with a champagne bar at 7134 E Stetson Drive on the Arizona Canal, opened in February 2008. Chef Gio Osso, later of Virtù, ran the kitchen from August 2008. It opened into the recession, was reworked as something more casual, and closed in 2010; The Herb Box took over the space in January 2011.

The Impeccable Pig
A quirky Scottsdale institution of the 1970s and '80s that fused restaurant and antiques shop — you lunched on continental fare and wine surrounded by purchasable furnishings and art — before quietly fading from the scene by the late 1990s.

The Lodge
The Lodge was the ski-lodge-themed bar that chef Aaron May and his partners opened in late November 2008 in a former First Watch A-frame at 4422 N 75th St, in Old Town's nightlife district. It billed itself as a quaint, Midwestern dive bar, and its Sasquatch Burger became one of the most famous plates in the Valley. It closed on November 16, 2014, and the address is now a condominium building.

The Melting Pot Scottsdale
The Melting Pot Scottsdale was the fondue franchise at Mercado del Lago, 8320 N Hayden Road at Via de Ventura in McCormick Ranch, reviewed as a new arrival in October 1997 and open for more than 22 years. It was the Valley's anniversary-and-first-date restaurant: cheese, then meat cooked at the table, then chocolate. It closed on September 29, 2019, after its owners failed to agree on a lease extension with the landlord.

The Mint Ultra Lounge
The Mint was the ultra-lounge at 7373 E Camelback Rd, on the Camelback end of Old Town's club circuit, open by 2012 and run at one point by Evening Entertainment Group. ABC15 reported it closed in 2020, yet it kept drawing reviews into 2024, and when Riot Hospitality announced Shiv Supper Club for the space in December 2024 it said Shiv would replace The Mint. Shiv opened there on May 14, 2025.

Dale Anderson's dependable American restaurant at the Smoke Tree Resort on Lincoln Drive, named by accident when regulars of his first restaurant kept calling it 'the other place' — a Scottsdale-Paradise Valley border institution for decades.

For 35 years, Dale Anderson's old-school American eatery near Scottsdale and Lincoln was the Valley's quintessential ladies' lunch: stained-glass windows, an epic salad bar, and models strolling among the tables in informal fashion shows.

The Rockin' Horse Saloon
The Rockin' Horse Saloon was Tucker Woodbury's 'Austin-esque roadhouse' on Indian School Road across from the Coach House, opened in 1991: a 5,500-square-foot honky-tonk that booked country on weekends and touring roots and alt-country acts like Son Volt, Wilco, Joe Ely and Michelle Shocked the rest of the week. A pressure-cooker fire destroyed it in June 1996; it reopened on Stetson Drive that year, and Woodbury left in 1998 to build The Vig, The Beverly and, with Charlie Levy, Crescent Ballroom.

The Rogue Bar
The Rogue Bar was the live-music dive at the bottom of Scottsdale Road, an 80-capacity room in a 1961 strip mall that Mark Maertens made out of the punk bar Sneaky Pete's in 2001 and Manny Tripodis ran from 2006. It booked about 20 touring acts a month, opened at 6 a.m., and closed on May 1, 2019 when the landlord declined to renew the lease. Blue Buddha Collective is there now.

The Skeptical Chymist
The Skeptical Chymist was the Irish pub at the southwest corner of the 101 and Frank Lloyd Wright, named for Robert Boyle's 1661 book and decorated with apothecary bottles, microscopes and hundreds of old books shipped from Ireland. Open by 2008 and famous for its Tuesday pub quiz, it closed around 2021. The Union Jack British Pub took the room in September 2021 and lasted seventeen months, closing January 29, 2023.

The Upton
The Upton was the New American restaurant and bar that opened on November 25, 2014, in the little house at 7216 E Shoeman Lane that had been Petite Maison, two weeks after James and Wendy Porter sold it. Former Petite Maison sous chef Chris Schlattman opened the kitchen with co-owners Sean Zimmerman, Bran Oberg and Pouria Malihi. It closed on Sunday, July 3, 2016, after less than two years.

The Works
The Works was the 14,000-square-foot warehouse dance club that Steven Rogers and Greg Walker opened off Scottsdale Road and Second Street in the spring of 1992: catwalks, lasers, a 100,000-watt sound system, after-hours sets until 7 a.m., underwear nights, drag Halloweens, and a crowd of ravers, club kids and gay Scottsdale that the town had never seen in one room. It launched DJs Eddie Amador and Markus Schulz and closed in the fall of 1997 when its lease ran out.

A tongue-in-cheek 'truck stop' planted in the middle of Scottsdale's boutique district, where 1970s shoppers and night owls ate chili and diner grub in a room done up like a highway pit stop — a cult favorite remembered in every local nostalgia roundup.

The Scottsdale sibling of the Grassroots Kitchen & Tap family served modern comfort food on Hayden Road from 2015 until 2022, when owner Christopher Collins converted the space into Collins Bros. Chophouse.

Wandering Horse Buffet
Talking Stick Resort's casino buffet grew out of the Wandering Horse Café that fed gamblers in Casino Arizona's tent days — four cuisines, live cooking stations, a brick-oven pizza kitchen, Sunday champagne brunch and weekend crab legs — before the pandemic closed it in March 2020 and the resort never brought it back.

Wildfish Seafood Grille
The Eddie V's founders' sibling seafood concept held the corner of Camelback and Scottsdale Roads at the Waterfront for over a decade — a huge circular bar, nightly happy hour and ninety-minute waits — until Darden closed it in March 2018 because its own Eddie V's was a few miles away.

Windmill Dinner Theatre
The Windmill Dinner Theatre at Scottsdale Road and Shea was a mainstay of the national dinner-theater circuit — imported television stars, more than a hundred productions, singing waiters called the Barnstormers — and the stage Bob Crane was playing in June 1978 when he was murdered a few blocks away.

For nearly three decades, the Phoenician's elegant Southwestern dining room overlooked the resort's fairways, serving refined chile-driven regional cooking — and quietly outlived its famous sibling Mary Elaine's by almost ten years.

Yamakasa
Yamakasa was the Japanese restaurant at 9301 E Shea Blvd, in a Safeway plaza at 92nd Street, that New Times reviewed as the Valley's newest in July 1990 and later called its premier Japanese restaurant. Fred Yamada ran the sushi bar and a young Nobuo Fukuda worked there. It faded after Yamada left to open Sushi on Shea in 1994, and by April 1996 Sushiko had its storefront.

Z'Tejas Southwestern Grill
The Austin-born Southwestern grill was a Scottsdale fixture for decades, first at Fashion Square and finally on Hayden Road in McCormick Ranch, before its last Arizona rooms shuttered quietly in spring 2025 and the whole chain closed for good on June 30.
