What is Poppy’s Office?
Drive Scottsdale Road north until the city runs out and you reach the Terravita Marketplace, the last shopping center before Carefree Highway. In the corner of it, at 34522 N Scottsdale Road, Suite 160, is a door that leads into a dead man’s office. That is Poppy’s Office, a 1,500-square-foot speakeasy the Keeler family opened on October 17, 2023, next to their tavern Liberty Station, and it is the farthest-north cocktail bar in North Scottsdale.
The office belonged to Paul Keeler, founder of Keeler Hospitality Group, who ran restaurants around the country with his wife Judy before the family settled in Arizona and opened Liberty Station here, a second one at DC Ranch, and Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse in Carefree. His grandchildren called him Poppy, and the name spread through the Valley restaurant trade. He died in 2021. His son Matt Keeler, the company’s CEO, says the idea for the bar came to him in a dream, and that he woke up, called his family, and told them they had to do it.
So the vestibule replicates Paul’s private office, down to the desk, the lamp, the bookshelves and the memorabilia of his favorite teams, and his sayings, the “Poppyisms,” are posted around the room. Beyond the hidden passage is the bar proper: rich fabrics, dark leather bar stools, wood and copper, low light, two curtained family booths, all designed by Type-X Design Studio.
The drinks are the serious part. Beverage director Adam Downey wrote the opening list, and in 2025 the program won Most Creative Cocktail Program at the Arizona Foodist Awards. Our verdict: it is a sincere, well-made bar that happens to be a memorial, and it is the best reason to drink north of Pinnacle Peak Road after dark.
How to drink at Poppy’s Office
Make an appointment. The website calls reservations appointments, and that is the right word for a 1,500-square-foot room that opens at 4 p.m. only five nights a week: Tuesday through Thursday 4 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday 4 to 11 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. When it opened, the first hour of the night was a built-in happy hour, with a second one in the last hour before close, so if you are watching the bill, the early slot is the one to book.
Order the three signatures. Poppy’s Cigar ($20 at opening) is Bruichladdich Classic Laddie and The Deacon whisky with apple, chocolate and Peychaud’s bitters and local honey, smoked tableside and finished with a Luxardo cherry; it is the drink people come for. Drink With Me Bebe ($16) is La Caravedo pisco with a rosemary-caper shrub, Judy’s limoncello and peach and sesame bitters. The Silver Fox ($16) is Buffalo Trace with salted espresso syrup and black walnut bitters on the rocks. There is also a full wine and beer list, and a tableside margarita built on fresh juice was part of the original plan.
Eat the tacos. The food is a short menu called Papi’s Tacos: carne asada, adovada (red chile smoked pork), pollo asada or carnitas on white corn tortillas with cabbage, onion, lime and salsa, plus chips with red and green salsa, chilled queso, guacamole and grilled elote. If you want brisket or a burger, the full Liberty Station menu is one door away and the staff will bring it over.
Who is there. Terravita, Winfield and the Carefree-border neighborhoods: retirees on date night, golfers off Terravita Golf Club, and a younger crowd that has nothing else like it within fifteen minutes. Parking is the shopping-center lot. Rideshare from Old Town is a long, expensive run; think of this as a North Scottsdale night, not an Old Town detour. The office, the dream and the empty suite
The suite next to Liberty Station had been empty since the tavern opened in 2016, and Paul and Matt Keeler had talked more than once about what to do with it. The Keelers were a restaurant family long before Arizona: Matt grew up in Massachusetts, where his parents owned and operated several restaurants, and Paul’s résumé ran through Hilton and Doubletree before he and Judy “retired” to the desert and promptly opened more. The company’s Scottsdale rooms came in a run: Market Street Kitchen at DC Ranch in 2012, Liberty Station at Terravita in 2016, a second Liberty Station in the Market Street Kitchen space in 2018, and Keeler’s in Carefree’s Spanish Village.
Paul died in 2021. In March 2023 the family announced the speakeasy, promising a summer opening; it slipped to October, which is normal for a build-out, and the bar opened on a Tuesday with a happy hour in the first and last hour of each night. Matt’s stated reason was simple. North Scottsdale did not have a speakeasy, and the family was delighted to open one in this part of town.
He was mostly right. The hidden-bar wave that started in Old Town in the 2010s had reached McCormick Ranch and the Airpark, but above the 101 the only comparable rooms were Tell Your Friends beneath The Americano on Scottsdale Road and The Peacock at DC Ranch. Poppy’s Office is well over ten miles north of either, and the first cocktail bar of any ambition at the Carefree end of the road, which has otherwise been country-club lounges and the saloons of Carefree and Cave Creek. The 2025 Foodist award put it on the same lists as the Old Town rooms, and a Top Mixologist nomination followed for 2026.
Honest assessment: the memorial framing could have been maudlin and is not; the office is a good trick that becomes, after a drink, simply a nice room. The cocktails are better than a strip mall at the city line has any right to serve. The limits are the hours and the location, and both are features if you live up here. It belongs near the top of our list of every bar and club in Scottsdale for the north end, and it is the one bar in the 2020s that made Terravita a destination.
