What is The Madam?
The Scottsdale Resort & Spa was the country’s first conference resort, which is not where you would look for a secret. That is the point. In a corner of the resort sits the Social Boardroom, a game-room bar with a pool table, shuffleboard and a golf simulator, and in the Social Boardroom stands a decorated bookshelf. Say the password and the bookshelf opens. Behind it is The Madam.
The room is tiny, about eight seats. Maroon walls, amber candles, and behind the bar a portrait of the Madam herself, a dark-haired woman in a red pearl necklace. The theme is Prohibition and the list is cocktails: classics plus house drinks, with a short menu of bites. The bartender is making drinks for a handful of people at once, which is the real luxury here.
It opened in January 2024, one of four venues the resort unveiled at the end of a renovation of about $40 million, alongside the restaurant La Fogata and Barnaby’s Café. Of everything on our speakeasy list, it is the most literally secret: no sign, a password, and so few seats that it is often full.
Getting through the bookshelf
Get the password. The resort hands it out and does not publish it. Hotel guests receive it at check-in. Everyone else gets it with a reservation, by asking at the front desk or the Boardroom bar, or from the resort’s social media posts. It changes, so do not trust one you read online.
Book. Reservations run through OpenTable, and with roughly eight seats you should treat booking as required on a weekend. During peak season the resort has limited reservations to two hours, so the table is yours for a round or two, not the night.
Check the days. The Madam opened in 2024 on a Wednesday-to-Saturday schedule, 4 p.m. to midnight. Most current listings show Wednesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight; some show Monday through Saturday. The schedule has moved before, so call (480) 596-7411 before you drive over.
What to order. Opening-week coverage named the Shot to Your Heart ($20) and Word of Mouth ($18); Experience Scottsdale singles out the Devil’s Gambit, garnished with dragon fruit and served only here. The menu changes, so tell the bartender what you like and let the room do what it is for. Food is bar bites: mini crab cakes, bacon-wrapped dates, truffle parmesan fries. OpenTable puts the check at $31 to $50 a person.
Go late. Reviewers note that the room’s windows undercut the mood in daylight. After dark the candles do their job.
Build the evening. Dinner at La Fogata, the resort’s signature restaurant, then the bookshelf. If The Madam is full, the Social Boardroom outside is a perfectly good bar with a pool table. And The Goose, the other McCormick Ranch speakeasy, is a few minutes north on Hayden at Mercado del Lago.
A secret room in the resort that invented the business trip
The building has a stronger claim to history than most speakeasies do. When the Scottsdale Conference Center opened at McCormick Ranch on September 4, 1976, it was the first resort in the United States built around corporate meetings, a format the whole hospitality industry later copied. For forty years the place was famous for being the opposite of secret: name badges, breakout rooms, a golf course for the afternoon.
The 2020s renovation changed the tone. The owners, Driftwood Capital, put roughly $40 million into rooms, grounds and restaurants and renamed the place The Scottsdale Resort & Spa. When the four new venues opened to the public on January 22, 2024, the announcement leaned on The Madam as the headline: a “Roaring Twenties” room with a password for guests. The old signature restaurant, Kitchen West, had already closed; La Fogata took its place.
The Madam arrived at the front of a wave. Between 2023 and 2025 Scottsdale opened most of its hidden bars, almost all of them tucked inside something larger: a pizza restaurant (The Goose), a steakhouse basement (Tell Your Friends), a hotel lobby (Straight Up), a wine bar (The Peacock). The Madam is the resort version, and the smallest of the lot.
Accounts disagree on the details in a way that suits a speakeasy. Most sources say eight seats and the third floor; one early report counted closer to twenty. Most say Wednesday through Saturday; some say six nights. What everyone agrees on is the bookshelf and the password.
Honest assessment: this is a resort amenity, priced like one, with a short food menu and service that reviewers describe as uneven when the room is quiet. But the room is beautiful, the drinks are good, and few experiences in Scottsdale feel as much like being let in on something. For a date in McCormick Ranch, it is the move.
