What is Selfmade?
Selfmade is the restaurant of Hotel Adeline, the 213-room pool hotel at 5101 N Scottsdale Road, on Scottsdale Road just north of Camelback at the top edge of Old Town, a short walk from Fashion Square. It opened with the hotel in January 2018 and has been its one full-service dining room ever since.
The hotel’s story explains the restaurant’s. The building is a 1960s motor hotel that spent years as a Days Hotel until HRI Lodging, a New Orleans hotel company, took it over in October 2016, ran it briefly as the Scottsdale Inn, and spent about $12 million turning it into something contemporary with, in its own phrase, a bohemian twist: a 3,000-square-foot zero-edge pool with cabanas and a bar, interiors by Studio 11 Design, and a restaurant concept developed with Ryan Jocque, the founder of Original ChopShop. The first press described that concept as Mediterranean-American; by 2020 the hotel was listing Selfmade as pizza and cocktails, with a coffee-and-brunch counter called Good Proper and the Freestyle pool bar. Today Selfmade handles breakfast, lunch and dinner daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and its menu is Southwestern-accented American cooking the hotel says is made from scratch.
The room is a lobby dining room with an open-air patio around an outdoor fireplace, which is the reason to come: it sits between the lobby and the pool deck, close enough to hear the weekend DJ and far enough to talk. The hotel’s whiskey speakeasy, Straight Up, is behind a vintage phone booth off the same lobby, and the Liquid Sunshine pool parties run on weekends from April through September.
Who it is for: guests, obviously, at breakfast; neighbors from the apartments and condos that have filled in around Scottsdale and Camelback; and anyone who wants a resort patio without a resort fee. Entrées run from a $20 Sonoran chicken sandwich to a $45 chimichurri steak, every check carries an automatic 20 percent gratuity, and the press we found does not name a chef. Our verdict: Selfmade is a well-run hotel kitchen with a better patio than its menu, and the best use of it is a late dinner and a drink next door.
Ordering at Selfmade
Order from the Southwestern side of the card. The September 2026 all-day menu, served from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., is strongest where it stops being a hotel menu. The red chile sopes ($20) come with pulled pork, crème fraîche, avocado and cotija; the chipotle empanadas ($16) are chicken and Monterey Jack with a serrano crema; the taco trio is carne asada or chicken at $18 and grilled snapper at $24. For a main, the chimichurri skirt steak ($45) with green chile chimichurri, parmesan heirloom potatoes and asparagus is the plate the kitchen cares about; the snapper Provençale ($38) is the alternative. The Southwest flatbread ($25), manchego, chorizo crumbles and roasted corn, is what the hotel means when it still talks about Scottsdale-style pizza.
The sandwiches are the value. All come with fries: the house burger ($22, Impossible patty for $6 more), a steak sandwich ($25) with red onion jam and basil pesto, a brisket melt ($25), a B.L.A.T. ($20) and the Sonoran chicken ($20) with a roasted chile relleno on the bun. Salads run $18 to $26. Dessert is the pâtisserie flight, three of six house desserts for $40 or one for $14: a Dubai chocolate tart, a matcha tiramisu, an ube mascarpone cheesecake, a limoncello cake. Share it.
Breakfast, 7 to 11 a.m. The chilaquiles ($19) in a scratch ancho-guajillo sauce with two eggs are the dish to order; the breakfast burrito ($21) has house chorizo, and the Morning Melt ($21) stacks bacon, eggs, Gruyère and red onion jam on country bread. A continental is $14, a build-your-own omelet $21, the Nutella-stuffed brioche French toast $21. The espresso bar pours Press Coffee Roasters nitro cold brew; the morning cocktails are a $20 Grande Mimosa, a $14 tequila Bloody Maria and a $14 mezcal Paloma.
Drink local. The cocktail list, $14 to $16, is built on Southwestern spirits: the Desert Geisha (Desert Door Texas sotol, lychee, orgeat), the Rodeo Ranch Water (Don Julio blanco, prickly pear, salted lime, soda), the Blackbird Margarita (Celaya reposado, crème de cassis, jalapeño) and a Banana Carajillo with Licor 43. Arizona cans from Papago, Mother Road, Huss, Barrio and Wren House are $8 and zero-proof drinks $11.
Timing and logistics. The pool party is the variable: Liquid Sunshine runs weekends from April through September, and the patio shares a wall with it. Weekday breakfast and late dinner are quiet. Self-parking is free by the hotel’s account, and the free Scottsdale Trolley stops nearby. There is no online booking for the restaurant on the hotel’s site; call (480) 284-7700. The motor-hotel strip that learned to throw a party
The stretch of Scottsdale Road between Camelback and Chaparral was, for fifty years, a row of roadside motels built for the postwar tourist boom, the cheap seats behind the resorts on Lincoln Drive. By the 2010s most of them were tired, and the two that were rebuilt tell the story of the 2010s in Old Town hospitality. On one side of Camelback, Classic Hotels turned Kimpton’s FireSky into The Scott in 2017; on the other, HRI Lodging turned a Days Hotel into Hotel Adeline in 2018. Both bet that a design-forward mid-priced hotel with a serious pool could pull locals as well as guests, and both put a restaurant in the lobby to prove it.
HRI’s version was the louder one. The company took the Scottsdale Inn in October 2016, announced $12 million in upgrades, hired Studio 11 Design for the rooms, and brought in Ryan Jocque, whose Original ChopShop had just shown the Valley that fast-casual could be healthy and crowded. The restaurant he helped shape was first pitched as Mediterranean-American; the name Selfmade, like the hotel’s, is explained nowhere in the press we found, though the hotel’s marketing describes Adeline as a sassy, spontaneous character and the restaurant as scratch cooking with Scottsdale twists. Good Proper, the coffee-and-brunch counter listed in 2020, has since vanished from the hotel’s pages, and Selfmade absorbed breakfast.
The hotel found its identity at the pool, not the table. Liquid Sunshine, the weekend DJ party, became the thing Hotel Adeline is known for, and Straight Up, the phone-booth speakeasy, became the thing people photograph. In March 2021 the hotel joined Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio, the first in Arizona, which put Selfmade’s bookings on Marriott’s systems and its clientele on Bonvoy points. The menu followed the crowd: the 2026 card is Southwestern comfort food for people who have been in the sun, with sotol and prickly pear at the bar and a 20 percent service charge worth knowing about before the check arrives.
What the record does not say is who is cooking. HRI runs Selfmade as a hotel outlet, and no chef’s name appears on its menus or in the coverage we found, which is itself a fact about the place. The pâtisserie flight, with its Dubai chocolate tart and ube cheesecake, is the one spot where the kitchen chases a trend rather than a guest.
Honest assessment: Selfmade is competent, convenient and priced for a hotel, and it is not a destination. The sopes, the chimichurri steak and the chilaquiles are good; the flatbreads are a stretch at $25; the real reasons to come are the fireplace patio and the two bars on either side of it. If you are staying on this stretch of Scottsdale Road, it is the easy dinner. If you are not, it is a pleasant stop between Fashion Square and the Old Town bars, best taken late, with the password for Straight Up in your pocket.
