What is HiFi?
Every bar district needs a room that plays the songs everyone knows, and on Saddlebag Trail that room has been HiFi since 2013. It is the entertainment district’s most unpretentious dance floor: no chateau, no South Beach theme, just a music-obsessed bar with a kitchen, a big sound system and a calendar of nights with names like Saturday Night Fever.
HiFi Kitchen & Cocktails opened on March 28, 2013, at 4420 N Saddlebag Trail, the building it shares with Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row and, since 2024, Mother Tucker’s Tavern. Its owners were Les and Diane Corieri, the couple behind Evening Entertainment Group, whose Old Town résumé runs back through Axis-Radius and forward to Bottled Blonde around the corner. The pitch at launch was a retro “hi-fi” bar: vintage stereo speakers built around the TV screens, a “digital graffiti” wall, “amped-up American” bar food and a long menu of adult milkshakes. Garage doors open the room onto Indian Plaza and Saddlebag Trail, so on a mild night it feels half outdoors.
In the summer of 2019 the Corieris closed HiFi for a remodel and reopened it on Labor Day weekend as something louder. The wood-and-distressed-metal bar gave way to a 20-foot LED video wall behind the DJ booth, projectors, moving lights, a 360-degree sound system, a liquid-nitrogen cloud effect and decor built from cassette tapes, album covers and a turntable hostess stand. The milkshakes eventually came off the menu. The music theme stayed.
What it feels like now depends on the night. Early on a Friday it is a bar with smash burgers and cocktails; by eleven it is a dance club where the DJ plays the hits, and the crowd sings along.
Eating, dancing and picking your night
Come at five for the kitchen. On Friday and Saturday HiFi opens at 5 p.m., and Sunday at noon. That’s the window when the food is the point: the HiFi Double Smash, smash burgers in classic, mushroom and Hawaiian versions, wings in Buffalo, spicy garlic or garlic Parmesan, a toasted pretzel, onion rings and a sandwich board that includes a pork tenderloin sandwich and a Maid-Rite. The Walking Taco, Cool Ranch Doritos with chili, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream and cheese poured right into the bag, is the order people photograph.
Pick a theme night. HiFi runs on a weekly calendar: Bingo After Dark on Wednesdays, College Night on Thursdays, Friday Night Fi, Saturday Night Fever and Sunday Funday. Wednesday and Thursday it opens at 8 p.m. and is mostly a night out rather than a meal. If you want throwback hits and a crowd that knows the words, Saturday is the one.
Tables cost money on weekends. The bar sells bottle service, and on Friday and Saturday nights the booths go to groups that booked ahead. Two people can walk in and dance; a birthday party of ten should reserve.
Placement. HiFi sits at the heart of the district, a stumble from El Hefe, CAKE and Bottled Blonde. That is convenient for a crawl and terrible for parking; rideshare in, especially during WM Phoenix Open week and spring training. Our nightlife guide explains how a night moves through the grid.
The Corieris’ music room
HiFi belongs to a family of Old Town bars that tells the story of the district’s last thirty years. Les and Diane Corieri’s Evening Entertainment Group ran Axis-Radius, the Indian Plaza club that defined Scottsdale nightlife in the 2000s, then rebuilt half of its space as Bottled Blonde in 2014. HiFi opened the year before, in March 2013, and represented the same turn away from the pure nightclub toward rooms that make money across more hours: a bar with a kitchen, TVs for football Sundays and a DJ for later.
The concept was always the music. Reviewers of the original room singled out its audio power and its retro stereo gear, and its first weekend booked DJs on a three-night rotation. The 2019 remodel kept that idea and spent on it. HiFi’s entertainment director described the old room as “a classic bar look” and the new one as an attempt to show off the 80s, 90s and 2000s, which is still what you hear on a Saturday. In a district that keeps chasing the next look, HiFi’s choice was to become the place for songs people already like.
It is also a reminder that the entertainment district is a small world run by a few operators. Evening Entertainment Group’s current lineup includes Bottled Blonde, HiFi, Casa Amigos and Skylanes in Scottsdale, and in 2024 it partnered with the team behind The Porch to open Mother Tucker’s Tavern in the same building as HiFi. Riot Hospitality Group runs most of the rooms on the other side of the ledger, from CAKE to Riot House. The 2010s built that map, and the 2020s have mostly kept it.
Honest assessment: HiFi is not the hippest room on Saddlebag and has never tried to be. The burgers are good bar burgers, the Walking Taco is a joke that happens to be delicious, and the dance floor is friendlier than the bottle-service clubs nearby. After more than a decade, that formula still fills the room on a Saturday night.
