Nobody books a hotel near Mayo Clinic for fun, so this note is short on poetry and long on miles. The one thing to settle before you look at a single hotel: Mayo Clinic has two campuses in the Valley, and they’re 14 miles apart. A hotel that’s two minutes from one of them is twenty-plus minutes from the other, and the “near Mayo Clinic” in a hotel’s name doesn’t say which. Our Mayo Clinic in Arizona guide has the full story; here’s the part that decides where you sleep.
First, find your campus
- Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale campus, 13400 E Shea Boulevard, at the far east end of the Shea Corridor, where the city runs out against the McDowell Mountains. It’s the original 1987 clinic: outpatient visits, imaging, labs and research.
- Mayo Clinic Hospital, Phoenix campus, 5777 E Mayo Boulevard, at 56th Street just north of the Loop 101 in north Phoenix. Surgery, inpatient stays, the cancer center and most of Mayo’s newer Arizona buildings are here.
Your appointment letter says which. If your week involves both, which is common, Mayo runs a free courtesy shuttle between the two campuses, Monday through Friday from about 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM, every half hour. That shuttle changes the math: a patient with a car-free caregiver can sleep near one campus and still reach the other on a weekday.
A note on drive times. The times below are off-peak, measured door to door. Add ten to fifteen minutes on the Loop 101 between about 7:00 and 9:00 AM and 4:00 and 6:30 PM, and more during the WM Phoenix Open week, when the 101 around TPC Scottsdale crawls.
Near the Scottsdale campus on Shea
This is the quiet end of the city: desert, golf, the Preserve and very few hotels. That’s the appeal and the problem.
- Sonesta Select Scottsdale at Mayo Clinic Campus. The hotel next door to the campus, about 0.4 miles from the clinic’s front door, a two-minute drive. It’s a 124-room former Courtyard, renovated in 2023, and the hotel advertises a free weekday shuttle to the Mayo Clinic campus. It also takes dogs and cats with no breed or weight limit, two per room, for a $75 fee per stay, which is rare out here. Mid-priced. This is the default for anyone with a week of outpatient appointments on Shea, and the reason it fills first.
- Inn at Eagle Mountain. Thirty-seven suites with kiva fireplaces and whirlpool tubs beside a golf course in Fountain Hills, about 3 miles and eight minutes east of the clinic. Upper-mid-priced. The pick for a caregiver staying two weeks who needs something better than a hallway and an ice machine.
- Spark by Hilton Fountain Hills. The budget answer: a small, pet-friendly hotel with free breakfast on Shea in Fountain Hills, about 5.5 miles and eleven minutes from the clinic.
- Fountain Park Hotel. Downtown Fountain Hills, about 6 miles and twelve minutes away, with kitchen suites, free breakfast and the fountain going off on the hour across the street. Mid-priced, and the only option on this list where the Avenue of the Fountains puts dinner a block’s walk away.
- ADERO Scottsdale. The splurge: a 177-room resort on a McDowell ridgeline in a certified dark-sky community, about 5 miles and fifteen minutes from the clinic. For the patient who has been told to rest and can afford to.
- We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort. On the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation past Fountain Hills, about 8 miles and fifteen minutes away. Good rooms and Four Peaks out the window; a casino isn’t everyone’s idea of a recovery ward.
What none of these has: a restaurant row. The Sonesta’s own restaurant, The Commons, handles breakfast and an easy dinner. Beyond that, Over Easy on Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard is the local breakfast, and the Shea strip malls to the west hold Chompie’s and Sweet Republic.
In the middle: the Shea corridor at the 101
If your appointments split between campuses, or you want restaurants within a few minutes, the cluster at Shea and the Loop 101 is the honest compromise. All three hotels here are about 6 to 7 miles and thirteen to fifteen minutes from the Shea clinic, and about 9 miles and thirteen to fifteen minutes from the hospital, the 101 doing the work.
- Sonesta Simply Suites Phoenix Scottsdale. A real kitchen in every suite, on 90th Street just north of Shea. Mid-priced. Built for the month-long stay.
- La Quinta Phoenix Scottsdale. Free breakfast, a heated pool, dogs welcome, at the lower end of mid-priced.
- Aiden by Best Western Scottsdale North. More than half the rooms are suites, many with patios on the pool, and there’s a full bar for the evening you need one.
West along Shea, the Hampton Inn on Shea, the Holiday Inn Express and the budget Extended Stay America studios at 69th Street are all about 8.5 miles and fifteen to seventeen minutes from the Shea clinic, and about 7 miles and fourteen minutes from the hospital. Fine, but they’re not closer to either campus than the 101 cluster; book them for price or for Gainey Village dinners.
Near Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix
The hotels people find by searching “Sleep Inn North Scottsdale near Mayo Clinic” are here, at Scottsdale Road and Bell Road. The Mayo in their names is the hospital, not the Shea clinic.
- Sleep Inn North Scottsdale. About 105 rooms on the Phoenix side of Scottsdale Road, roughly 3 miles and seven minutes from the hospital, and 10 miles and twenty minutes from the Shea clinic. Free breakfast and parking, a noon checkout, no pets. The cheapest of the cluster.
- Hampton Inn & Suites Phoenix-Scottsdale. Next door, the same distances, and it takes dogs and cats. Lower mid-priced.
- Courtyard, SpringHill Suites and Residence Inn Scottsdale North. The Marriott trio at the same corner, each about 2.7 to 2.8 miles and six or seven minutes from the hospital. The Residence Inn has full kitchens; the SpringHill’s suites have a sofa bed and a sitting area.
- Hyatt House and Hyatt Place North Scottsdale. The closest of the lot, opened in 2021 on Scottsdale Road north of Frank Lloyd Wright, about 1.8 miles and five minutes from the hospital. The House half has kitchens and 24-hour laundry, which is what a two-week inpatient stay needs.
- Home2 Suites Scottsdale North. By the 101 at the top of Scottsdale Road, about 2.5 miles and six minutes from the hospital, with kitchenettes and pet-friendly rooms.
- JW Marriott Desert Ridge. The big resort across the Phoenix line, about 4 miles and eight minutes west. Worth it when a family is gathering for a long stay and wants a lazy river for the kids between visits.
From this corner, the Scottsdale Promenade across the road has a Trader Joe’s and Picazzo’s, and Kierland Commons is about a mile south for a proper dinner.
The shuttles, honestly
What we could confirm:
- Mayo’s intercampus shuttle, free, weekdays, about 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM, every thirty minutes.
- The Sonesta Select’s weekday shuttle to the Mayo Clinic campus, advertised on the hotel’s own page. It doesn’t publish hours; ask at check-in, and book your return the night before.
What we couldn’t: patients on Mayo’s own discussion forum have reported that the Sleep Inn and the Hampton next door run on-request shuttles to the hospital, and at least one said the van was too busy to rely on. Neither hotel advertises it on the pages we could read, so treat it as a maybe and call. Everywhere else, assume a rideshare or your own car. On weekends, both confirmed shuttles stop.
What it costs, and when
These are hotels that live on medical travel, so they never empty out the way the resorts do, but they still follow the city’s calendar.
- January through March is high season everywhere, and the Bell Road hotels have three event weeks on top of it: Barrett-Jackson (January 23 to 31, 2027), the Phoenix Open (February 8 to 14, 2027) and spring training in March. The budget hotels near the hospital sell out those weeks. If you have appointment dates in that window, book the day you get them.
- April and May ease off; summer and September are the cheapest months of the year on every hotel on this list, and the summer playbook explains how far the Fountain Hills and ridgeline resorts drop.
- October to December is shoulder season, with Thanksgiving and the holiday weeks the exceptions.
By tier: the Sleep Inn, Spark and Extended Stay America are the budget end; the Hampton, Marriott trio, Hyatts, Home2, La Quinta, Aiden, Sonesta Simply Suites and Sonesta Select are mid-priced; Inn at Eagle Mountain, ADERO, We-Ko-Pa and the JW cost more, by a lot in winter.
Who each suits
- A week of outpatient tests on Shea, no car: the Sonesta Select and its shuttle.
- Surgery or an inpatient stay in Phoenix: Hyatt House for the kitchen and the five-minute drive, the Sleep Inn or Hampton if the budget matters more.
- Appointments at both campuses: the Shea and 101 cluster, or sleep near the campus you visit most and ride Mayo’s shuttle to the other.
- A caregiver for a month: a kitchen. Sonesta Simply Suites, Residence Inn, Hyatt House or Home2.
- Traveling with a dog: the Sonesta Select, the Hampton, La Quinta or Home2. Not the Sleep Inn.
Between appointments
The Shea campus backs onto some of the best desert in the city. The Lost Dog Wash trailhead on 124th Street leads into the McDowell Sonoran Preserve a few minutes from the clinic, and an hour on the wash trail at sunset does more for a long day than anything in a hotel room. Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s desert camp, is a short drive north. In summer, walk before 8:00 AM or after dark, and carry water even for a short one; our summer hiking rules are not negotiable. If you landed at Sky Harbor, the airport note covers the ride out: about 24 miles and forty minutes to the Shea campus, a little less to the hospital.
