Call it the last quiet year of the founding era. In 1908 Scottsdale was still the village the 1890s had built: the wooden schoolhouse of 1896, the general store and post office, dirt streets, farm families, and a scattering of health seekers in tent cottages. Twenty years after Winfield Scott’s land filing, that was the whole inventory — and within twelve months, half of it would be replaced or outclassed.
The forces gathering were not secret. In May the Reclamation Service finished Granite Reef Diversion Dam, the concrete structure that now turned the Salt into the Arizona Canal at a single flood-proof point — and Roosevelt Dam had been rising in its canyon since 1906, moving the valley steadily toward reliable water. The winter climate that drew tuberculosis patients was starting to look, to sharper eyes, like something that could be sold to healthy people too. In 1909 the settlement would get a brick schoolhouse, a new proprietor at the store, and its first resort next door — the year everything upgraded. 1908 was the before picture.
