Tom Kaufman, who runs The Living Room on Market Street, says he never liked speakeasies that make you beg for a secret word. So in February 2023 he converted a former dance studio behind his wine bar into The Peacock and left the door findable: a peacock marks it. Behind it are 40 seats, leather sofas, peacock-feather wallpaper, shelves of vintage books and a few taxidermied animals watching you drink.
Menus come bound in leather. The TFK Smoked Old Fashioned carries Kaufman’s initials and the Peacock 75 is the lighter opener; the wine list borrows from The Living Room’s 200-plus bottles. Food runs from hand-rolled sushi to flatbreads to a real dinner, so this works as the whole evening rather than a stop.
When to go: Thursday, when a saxophone and piano duo plays and the room fills with DC Ranch neighbors. The Peacock lists Thursday through Saturday, 5:00 PM to close, as of this writing.
