Scottsdale imports most of its food ideas from the coasts; this one came from downtown Phoenix. Lo-Lo’s is Larry White’s soul food spot, a modern riff on his grandmother’s Golden Rule Cafe, and the Scottsdale room on Scottsdale Road has been feeding the south side since around 2010.
The fried chicken is hard-fried and properly crisp over a sweet, cinnamon-edged waffle. The shrimp and grits are what convert people who came for the novelty.
When to go: breakfast runs all day, so skip the weekend morning wait and come on a weekday afternoon. Bring an appetite and plan on leftovers.
